It has been recently confirmed that John Boehner has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak before congress about Iran, in the spring. The move is a complete slap in the face to President Obama; it is also very possibly an act of treason.

    -------------

The move to have Netanyahu speak to congress regarding Iran is a new extreme in the GOP’s plan to usurp Obama’s ability to govern. It also shows that Netanyahu is willing to play along; despite predictions it may be his undoing (if he is still in office, the Israeli elections are coming up soon). Whether or not any legal actions against Boehner come to fruition, he is asking the leader of a foreign government that has a primary concern to benefit Israel, not the United States. Perhaps, that is enough to for the people of the United States to decide on their own that he is a traitor.

No treason, just a politician being a dumbass.

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.

The Congress shall have power to declare the punishment of treason, but no attainder of treason shall work corruption of blood, or forfeiture except during the life of the person attainted.

Wow what a stupid thread. Impressive in its foolishness. Did the speaker of the house commit treason by inviting the leader of an ally to speak before the house? No, obviously not. In fact, only a complete r****d would believe that was a treasonous act, even if the president didn't want it to happen. Don't worry OP, I'm not calling you a r****d, I know you don't actually believe it either.

Really the only thing that makes this is a story is the Obama Administration's petty, vindictive reaction. Everyone knows that relations between Netanyahu and Obama are ice cold -- stemming from several shows of disrespect from Obama. A large pocket of the far left sympathizes greatly with the Palestinians, and Obama has to do just enough to appease this group. Obama staffers are furious at the visit and speech because they have been boxed into a corner and shown to be non-factors in their own government when it comes to US-Israel relations. But if Obama is going to ignore foreign policy, then Congress must take the lead. This situation is the direct result of Obama's weak foreign policy and prioritization of his cheap popular culture political issues. Again, not a surprise given the base he has to play to (a highly uninformed group that would rather see him dance on Ellen than speak with foreign leaders).

the legislative branch is a coequal branch of government

Obama is not a king to be obeyed

that inviting the prime minister to speak is a problem tells you how far Obama has gone in destroying the relationship with Israel

Ya... I mean having empathy for the Palestinians.... How morally reprehensible is that? Shame on them.

I love that a president who believes that Israel is not infallible equates to disrespect. How high on a pedestal do some of you right wingers have Israel on?

Next, I'd like to see Boehner invite Stephen Harper to talk to a joint session about the benefits of Keystone XL and I'd like to see him invite the Iraqi Prime Minister to talk about whether we are actually making gains against ISIS. Keep it coming -- maybe this will force Obama to actually pay attention to foreign policy.

Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren has said the speech threatens a rift with the US and should be canceled

"The behavior over the last few days created the impression of a cynical political move, and it could hurt our attempts to act against Iran," former ambassador Michael Oren said, according to Ynet News. "It's advisable to cancel the speech to Congress so as not to cause a rift with the American government. Much responsibility and reasoned political behavior are needed to guard interests in the White House."
