From my point of view (I'm a graphic designer) — weak cheesy looks like the first draft of a better logo just my 2¢
When I first saw it, I was like... "What the f*ck" cause I'd never seen a logo like that before. First thing that came into my mind was... it looks gothic... then right after that I thought "Quake3!" As someone pointed out earlier, this looks very much like the Quake3 symbol and I could not agree more. So my first impression was, "This sucks cause its so weird." Then I looked at the symbol. I saw the R, I saw the h, and then I saw the Rocket with a launchpad. This is more clever than i thought... This is MUCH better than the "dildo with teeth" and lets at least admit that the red and yellow symbol is only good because of nostalgia reasons because we won championships. So artistically, this logo beats them all. It's a little plain with one color, but as shown by someone else, outline it with silver and it looks MUCH better. So I say, outline the thing so that it has two colors, and also get rid of the exhaust trails that look like blood. You *could* add a net around the circle but I think that it would be too much. Having a simple logo is best for the long term. Just please take off those exhaust trails. Right now the logo looks just "ALRIGHT" but it has the potential to look "GREAT."
Hey everyone-- Been lurking a long time, mostly refrained from posting. Love the site, the personalities, thanks for having me. (apologies if this posted twice). Great work, Tim and Company. The logo's clean, simple. Most people are objecting on grounds that it's too "boring" or that a 5th grader could have drawn it. I think these things go hand in hand. If something is clean and simple, naturally it will look like it was easy to design in the first place. When of course that' s not the case. Aside from the dripping blood, the logo's classy. And if we want contrast, we can always put this against a blue, black, or platinum backdrop. Only nitpick--is the "H" formed by the intersection at the top, or the one at the bottom? Hard to tell, and I think is why it's not obvious that it's both an R and an H. But these are just nitpicks---- I'm fired up!
Damn, I just saw this. Ok, it's simple. Ok, its' red. Ok, it doesn't look like a cartoon. But... Talk about NOT classic. This just looks trendy. When the Texans released their logo, I instantly liked the name "Texans," a name I had HATED up until that point. But, the logo was so freakin' good and classic and timeless, I was hooked. That logo is something I just cannot see losing its appeal with age. The new Rockets logo just looks like something in 10 years we'll wonder what the hell they were thinking like with parachute pants and penny loafers. It's not awful or anything, but it looks like something that will be dated fairly quickly. It just doesn't look like anything that will stand the test of time. By the way, I don't see this as boring or something a child could have done. This does not look like that to me. In fact, simplistic logos are MUCH more effective in the long run than overly adorned logos. The one's with lots of drawing, etc, turn ugly quick.
Sorry, but anybody who could, and has, foisted these last two logos on us fans is capable of anything! Can you imagine little "tin men" running around the court! Like the "Twilight Zone" movie, when the guy on the stretcher is asked, "Do you want to something really scary?" Maybe the Rocks would be the first to wear little silver party tinman hats! Now that's scary.
Here is ESPN's article. Nothing much new except an outside opinion. http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0708/1578252.html
http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/The_Next_BIG_Thing-79841-34.html From rockets.com, gives Eiko Ishioka's explanation to the new logo.
I wonder how much the Rockets paid for that? Hell, I could have done something like this and saved them a helluva lot of money...
The more I look, the less I like. It looks like 15 minutes at a draft table... Seriously, if I had come up with this, I wouldn't even have posted it in here. It looks juvenile. Still like the idea of clean lines, but this logo is anything but classic or great... Honestly, guys, what would your reaction have been if two weeks ago someone in here posted this as thier idea?
I like it. I agree with both the gothic impressions (if one thinks in terms of Hammer films in the late sixties) and the Asian influence. But it does have both a classical and futuristic look to it. It's clean but is also a little startling to me. There isn't a logo in baskeball it remotely reminds me of, and I think that too is positive. I'm really impressed on a lot of levels. But I'm getting a little confused about the consensus here that the uniforms will be silver with some black. Some people here are claiming that white will be more predominant - and that seems to make more sense given the logo. Not to mention the fact that a white background further evokes our past.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing...wait for the uniforms. The "old" logo wasn't that bad until they put it on the belly of the unis and added the bars etc. So just imagine how much worse it could be when they release the new unis. As for the logo my main complaint is that it has no depth, meaning not only is is a single color but there is no shading to add depth. I'm not all that happy with it but it could be worse. It doesn't take much to top the last couple unis. Oh, yeah. My first impression was that this was the secondary logo, kind of like the R supposedly on the draft cap...
I think the logo is cool but i think the ring around it.. the O should be in silver. could someone paint that ring in silver. I don't have the program to do it. I Think that would be cool.
The more I look at it, the more I think this looks like the logo for a trendy LA sushi bar or the logo on the chest of a Japanese animated action hero.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw the logo was that it resembled the Texans' font. Very similar. I would like to see some more color in it though. Like putting the texture, and lines of a basketball inside the circle in silver/platinum.
Here's what's throwing me off. The focal point of the logo seems to be the bottom bar, where the "launching pad" intersects the two columns. So when you first look at it, your eyes are immediately drawn to the bottom of the circle and then the dripping blood. It's only later you realize that it's a rocket. After I look at it for a few second my eyes adjust, and I like it, and then when I look at it again later I see dripping blood. Don't know if anyone else has the same sensation.
