pgabriel Indians in South America were at least considered humans. They weren't considered civilized. The Jesuits and other Catholic orders in South America made alliances with the tribes there and used them as workers and even as soldiers. They also taught them Christianity and tried to civilize them. I am pretty sure, not 100%, that Americans and Brits treated the Indians in North America as humans, but highly uncivilized savage ones. I know there were efforts to civilize them and convert them, but none as highly organized as what went on in South America. You are right that not all Indians died from disease, but about 80+% died from disease. Possibly the greatest disaster in human history, since the population in the Americas rivaled the population of Europe (if I remember correctly). In America, the Indians really didn't start to get killed off purposely until America got obsessed with Manifest Destiny and controlling all the land they could. The main reason they weren't used as slaves is simply because they could not control the Indians. Runaway Indians could find refuge with other Indians who had weapons. There wasn't anything like that for Africans if they tried to runaway. Also, the Indians were never pacified because they had weapons and had something to fight for. The Africans tended to accept their condition more because they had no real way to fight back. I am only saying Africans because the first generation of Africans is completely different group from the 2nd generation mainly due to language and cultural barriers. I don't believe there were any slave revolts among first generation African slaves in America. Anyhow...I just wanted to point those things about since you were saying there had to be some other reason why Indians weren't enslaved. Africans weren't picked because they can work in the heat better. They were only used because they were black and considered less than human. There is no other reason.
It can't be factual if it's not a fact. Something that comes from a biased source is not a fact. It is a fact that tests can be biased. From the biased tests you cannot say that it is a fact that someone who does poorly on a test that the test is biased against is dumber than a person who does well on the test that favors the person. What you are talking about is a book called The Bell Curve. The people who wrote the book were completely discredited because they fudged the numbers to fit their ideas.
I did not read the book, and as I said in another post, I was told this by my black sociology professor. This was during a discussion about the relevence and validity of data. That may well have been the book she was referring to...did it come out about 3 years ago? Anyways, my point was not that one race is smarter than another (I don't believe that). My point was that stating facts can still be racist. Saying that black people can handle the heat may be a fact in that science shows that black people have some physical advantages with respect to the heat, but I still consider it a prejudicial statement because you aren't considering the individual. I know some white people that bail hay in 100+ degree weather, and one black person that doesn't like to be outside more than 15 minutes. I think a better example of what I'm trying to say is women in the military. If someone said women don't belong in the military because they aren't as strong as men, that would (on average) be a factual scientific statement. Men (on average) have more muscle mass, etc than women. However, I think that saying such a thing is sexist (even though it is a fact) because some women are stronger than the average man. Is that a little more clear?
How about this: These are the comments of one man, and who really cares what he says. I will agree that it is funny how the national media has not jumped all over Dusty Baker for these comments, if it was a white manager saying it.....they would be having a field day. DD
Have you been watching the news DaDakota? They talked about it a lot on ESPN yesterday. I also contend that they'd be talking about it a lot more had not one of the biggest sports stars been arrested for sexual assault recently.
I heard about the story Sunday. I guess DaDakota is just tired of the Black controled media keeping the white man down.
