We're talking about self defense for a little kid here.

I agree with several of the posters here: if you are taking your son to BJJ for self defense you are making a mistake.

Any good reality based martial art will tell you that going to the ground is a mistake and should be avoided at all costs. You have to understand that just because people use it on UFC doesn't make it good for real life. There are rules for those fights intended to make them last as long as possible.

You are much better off getting him taught a striking art. Even vanilla boxing would be better than BJJ for self defense in my opinion. While he is trying to take bullies to the ground to submit them the bully will likely be throwing punches and kicks. Joe Soliz of 3rd coast MMA is an amazing Jeet Kune Do / Kali instructor as others have mentioned. He's a senior instructor for Progressive Fighting Systems (this is taught by Paul Vunak, who has taught the military -- including the Navy Seals [fighting.net]). Any striking art will do however, the best of these will teach you not to go to the ground, but what to do when you get there. Krav Maga and Jeet Kune Do are both very good about this. Any striking art will do however, Muay Thai is great for example.

A little about myself, I am 37 years old, and worked as a mercenary driver in the Middle East. I have escorted important clients through high-risk areas in Iraq and Afghanistan for five years. Safety/protection is no joke. For $30, you are likely to get some 17-year-old kid who just got his license and will drive your daughter in his unarmored Ford Focus. I've seen an IED blow a Ford Focus into thousands of pieces, none larger than a golf ball.

My security package is well worth the $200 per trip. We will pick your daughter up in a random Suburban. Four trucks will pull up, and she will get into a random one every day. This is so the enemy does not know which one to attack. The Suburban she is in will have an armed security detail of men I have worked with in Iraq. We know what we are doing. She will be escorted in our convoy down the highway at a high rate of speed to avoid stopping in "kill zones." All vehicles are equipped with an MIRT which is used to change the traffic lights to green so we will not have to slow down. Your daughter will arrive safely in your arms no later than 20 minutes from when she is extracted from the soccer field.

Please reconsider my offer. You can't put a price on your daughter's safety.

You cannot go wrong with Mike Partlow. He is the best of the best. One time he killed an entire truck of insurgents using just a fork from his salad. He makes do with what he has and will survive the worst of situations.

BJJ in Katy/Houston

I know this is an old post and not sure if you've found a school. I train at Katy BJJ (affiliate of Revolution Dojo under Jeff Messina). Any school associated with Professor Jeff and Coach Ben Malmberg (Katy BJJ - Brown Belt under Jeff Messina) is reputable in Houston or Katy, especially for kids as well. I'm a Purple Belt under Ben at Katy BJJ. Hope you found a good school! OSS!

Tony started his gym off of yale way back in the day. I want to say around 1997. There was like 4 MMA gyms at that time. Patumwadee which was ran by Saul Solis who now runs the Metrol fight club. Tim Mousels self defense and I want to say thats about it. Tony is such a great person and instructor! He has been training with gracie bros in Cali back in the garage days. He trained with the best: Royce, Rickson, Royler and grandmaster Heilo.
