"James Participates in First Full Practice Since March

    By MIKE BRANOM
    .c The Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. (July 5) -- LeBron James took the floor for the first time as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The much-hyped No. 1 draft pick went through his first practice with his new teammates and coaches Saturday night.

James participated in a two-hour workout as the Cavaliers prepared for Orlando's six-team instructional league. James is expected to make his summer league debut Tuesday against the Magic.

"I'm just happy to be back out on the court, playing some competitive games with my teammates,'' said James, wearing rubber bands on both wrists reading "King James.''

The last time James took part in a full practice was March 22, the day before St. Vincent-St. Mary High School won the third Ohio state title in his prep career.

"My wind has to catch back up with me because there's a difference between workout stamina and running-up-and-down-against-other-people stamina,'' James said. "The wind's coming back and my legs are coming back. I'll be pretty well in a couple of days.''

The Cavaliers want the 6-foot-8 James to play point guard, the team's weakest position during its 65-loss season. That campaign allowed them to draft the phenom with the first pick in last month's draft.

"The young fella knows how to play and that was encouraging,'' coach Paul Silas said. "The reads he did in our halfcourt offense were just excellent.''

Added new teammate Darius Miles: "You can't take the ball from him; he can really dribble the ball.''

The Cavaliers arrived at the Magic's practice facility in a caravan of SUVs, with James riding in the passenger seat of a black Ford Expedition XLT driven by Miles. The team flew in from Cleveland earlier Saturday.

The practice capped off a big week for the 18-year-old James. On Wednesday, he signed a three-year, $12.96 million contract with the Cavaliers. He will be paid $4.02 million next season

James already has endorsement deals worth more than $100 million.

James will miss one or two games at the end of the team's stay in Orlando to attend a family member's wedding in Akron, Ohio.

Controversy already has surfaced over James' participation in the Orlando summer league.

The Magic are holding James' first game at the 17,283-seat T.D. Waterhouse Centre, their home arena, instead of their practice facility. Orlando season-ticket holders get in free, while others will be charged $5. All proceeds will be given to the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation.

But James' agent, Aaron Goodwin, has asked Cavaliers officials to seek a share of the proceeds for the team's own Cleveland-area charities.

Magic officials said the team might lose money by holding the game at their home arena as part of a Pepsi Pro Summer league tripleheader.

"What people must also understand is that there are real costs involved in putting on an event like this, and we will be lucky to break even with an admission charge of $0 and $5, respectively,'' Magic spokesman Joel Glass said. "If we intended to make money, we obviously would have charged significantly more and not made this into an added-value event for the fans.''

Said James: "I just want to go out there and have some fun. I'm going to let my agent deal with that and the Orlando Magic organization.''

Isn't that pretty sad? WOW! He had his first practice!...at 3 p.m. on July 5th, 2003. And they don't even say how it went.....they just have an article saying he had his first practice. How stupid. I don't think he is that good. I'm not expecting any replies...

It doesn't even say when his first game is gonna be.

I heard he missed his first 20-25 shots. I guess he was nervous.

Granted, I think the hype machine for the kid is waaaaay out of control. I mean showing h/s games on TV, get real! I just wish people would realize that underneath all this hype, this kid is a tremendous talent who could end up being a great player. Don't root for him to fail just because you don't like the hype.

LeBron will be as good as advertised but now would be a good time for the media to step back. LeBron's domination of High School basketball and being the #1 pick as a 18 year old is a media worthy story. But now he is just a great player in a league full of great players. LeBrons first practice dosent need to be the coverstory on CNNSI, theres much bigger stories than LeBron now that he is offically in the league.

It's not necessarily the media making a big deal out of LeBron - I think he wants the attention. I mean, look at his "request" to the Magic for a share of the charity profits - that's designed to get him in the news, because I don't think he can stand to be out of the spotlight.

And it may be his undoing in the end.

I don't want him to fail. I just want him to get knocked on his ass so he is comes back down to earth. I think he will be a great player and I love his game, but he needs a reality check.

Kind of like boot camp, right? I think he's a little too big for his britches (my grandmother used to say that) with a Hummer in high school and all the attention, but when Paul Pierce or T-Mac hangs a double nickel on his I've-Only-Played-Defense-Against-High-School-Kids butt, he will get a slight attitude adjustment. Personally, I just hope for his sake to not waste his talent, he's going to work harder than he's ever worked before. I just think the Cleveland fans (are there any?) who think he's going to be a savior need a serious reality check.

The bigger they are the harder they fall

The following is on the same basis so I though I would put it in this thread. The funniest part is his agent saying:
"Last week, Goodwin advocated that the Magic give some of the proceeds from the $5 tickets to games to Cleveland-based charities. The Magic earmarked funds for the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation. As of Monday night, it was still unclear whether the team would give any proceeds to the Cavaliers, Goodwin said.

"This has nothing to do with greed," Goodwin said. "LeBron has been exploited throughout his high school career and we wanted to see if we could use this opportunity to give something back to Cleveland."

If they really want to give something back to Cleveland put your money where your mouth is and give some of your own money or give a portion of each shoe sale to charity.

LeBron's agent wishes charity game was closed

LeBron James will play his first game in an NBA uniform in front of at least 12,000 fans when his Cleveland Cavaliers summer league team faces the Orlando Magic squad on Tuesday at the TD Waterhouse Centre in Orlando.

As of noon Tuesday, the Magic have sold 9,000 $5 tickets, reserved 3,000 free tickets for season-ticket holders and are withholding 5,000 more seats for season-ticket holders who might come forward to claim their tickets, according to Magic spokesman Joel Glass.

The tickets are good for three games, the final one featuring James against the Magic at 7 p.m.

"As we get closer to game time, if the seats we have put aside have not been claimed, we'll obviously put them on sale at the door," Glass said.

If the Magic sell or give away 2,779 more tickets, they will surpass their home attendance average from last year.

James' agent, Aaron Goodwin, told ESPN.com Monday night that he'd rather James have a chance to play competitively in private before being exposed to public scrutiny.

"This is supposed to be a learning experience, but it's hard for it to be when there will be more than 10,000 fans there and more than 100 members of the media," Goodwin said. "Before this year, the Magic's summer league was closed, but now they've opened it up (for a day) and in doing so, LeBron's every move will be watched, his every dribble, his every shot.

"I know LeBron welcomes the challenge, but I also realize he's just 18 years old," Goodwin said.

Last week, Goodwin advocated that the Magic give some of the proceeds from the $5 tickets to games to Cleveland-based charities.

Aaron Goodwin is so hypocritical, it's not funny.

The Magic are making a great move by not bowing down to the pressure put on by James via his agent. He didn't get what he wanted - a piece of the "profits" - so now, he goes on and makes these comments.

It just doesn't work in the NBA, especially not for a draft pick straight out of high school...because as of now, that's all LeBron James is.
