NO, we "Taiwanese" are NOT a subset of the Chinese. As a fellow Taiwanese, you should know better than this. What does this have anything to do with the ability of Lin as a basketball player? "Chinese" can refer to ethnicity or nationality. "American" can only refer to nationality, never ethnicity.
