As an owner of an 11 year old lab from two champion parents, I strongly encourage you to get a lab mix. My dog has arthritis and we are lucky we have the funds to pay for all the medications he needs but many do not. You start off with join supplemts. Then it is the Celebrex for dogs which is a fortune. Now it is the meds to protect his liver from the Celebrex.

Pure bread labs have a lot of hip and eye issues which mixed breed dogs often do not.

If you have to get a lab rescue one.

Heck, my local Petsmart in Southwest Austin had a Lab Day a couple of weeks ago. There were pups, mid-size, and adult labs, and some looked really nice. Good luck! I had a beautiful AKC female Lab back in the day that we loved, and 3 dogs over the years who were half Lab. One was half Lab and half Dalmation (looked like a large white dog, no spots - he was great!), I had a Labradoodle during the '70's and early '80's, before anyone knew there was such a thing, and the Wonder Dog was brilliant (loved to perform his large number of tricks at parties - he was a girl magnet!), and I have a young female Labradoodle now. Very, very smart, doesn't "smell like a dog" at all. Sweet and protective. They are all great with kids. I love Labs and apparently "Half-Labs." ;-)-

Once had an AKC Golden - he was an idiot. I'll never have another. Bad luck, probably. Oh, and saw the comment above. Never had a problem with my AKC female Lab, none at all. Never had a problem with my "Half-Labs," so BigSherv may have a point. Maybe, maybe no. :)-

im sure there are golden and lab rescue groups in your area. give a rescue dog a second chance yo! i got a five year old golden from gold ribbon rescue in austin last year and she is the tops!

that seems pretty ridiculous, but i know that with the rescue group i got my dog from they said they got over 1500 applicants a year for about 300-400 dogs. they could be picky...the whole interview process was pretty silly though. 30 minute phone conversation, personal house visit/inspection, multi-page application. they called my vet from my last dog too...i felt like i was adopting a kid more than a dog!

i found it funny that the adoption fee was almost the cost of a new puppy...but rescue groups will take care of all the necessary vaccinations, heartworms treatments and any other issues before adopting them out - that stuff can be expensive. and consider that the dog is eating food every day it is being fostered, which costs money too.

some of the dogs they get are in really bad shape and they will spend thousands to bring them back, so even if the dog you get was already healthy, that money is still going towards helping another 4-legged brah or lady-brah.

    Aw.

Looks just like my lab did as a puppy. BARC is great. I played charity tennis tournaments for them when I was in college.

Awesome! Rescue animals IMO have so much appreciation for their owner because they understand what's happening. I've always found adopted dogs are awesome companions!

    Winner.

Even if he doesn't end up being anything like a lab you're going to love him and never look back.
