Except the real problem with their defense has nothing to do with rim protection & rebounding. Its the fact that none of their perimeter players can keep a man in front of them, they don't guard the 3 point line, and they have some piss poor rotations defensively. Montie Williams really fell off the map as a defensive coach. I used to think he was a pretty good up and coming coach, but boy his stock has fallen.

It isn't always coaching. Often times it is the players on the floor and how they fit. You have spelled out exactly what the issue is. When you have no consistency on the perimeter, when you have players free lancing and no real focus; you will suffer defensively. We saw the same issues in Houston last year.

Somewhere down the road... if you made a trade with Morey, you made a mistake.

Hornets haven't paid Asik. He's in the 3rd year of the contract he signed with the Rockets.

Wait, doesn't the Pelicans pay him 15 million dollars this season?

I feel vindicated in being in the minority of clutchfans who did not want to trade for Anderson. I'll never be excited about a 4 who can't defend and can't rebound unless his name is Dirk...not Diggler.

I meant they haven't give Asik a long-term contract. He's playing out the string with them hoping for a new contract next summer.

One of the reasons he pouted when Dwight came (and the silly Dwasik experiment was halted) was the reduced playing time would hurt his value when his contract expired.

Asik was never as good as most people made his out to be. He has only played more than 1000 minutes once in 4 years in the NBA so his xramp isn't really as good as it seemed when he was a Rocket. We also had horrible backup centers during 2012-2013 so his on/off numbers were inflated by the poor defensive play of Aldrich, Ohlbrecht, and Smith.

    In NOP OffRtg DefRtg NetRtg
    Asik 102.0 107.1 -5.1
    Davis 107.3 105.4 +1.9
    Team 106.0 106.9 -0.9

Asik and Davis together(510 minutes) are great defensively(102.3), but equally as bad offensively(100.2) with a NetRtg of -2.2

Anderson and Davis together(486 minutes) are great offensively(112.7), but bad defensively(106.9) with a NetRtg of +5.2

Ajinca and Davis together(59 minutes) are great offensively(112.0), but also bad defensively(107.4) with a NetRtg of +4.6

Anderson and Asik together(209 minutes) are okay offensively(105.7), but horrible defensively(116.3) with a NetRtg of -10.6

Asik and Howard together(104 minutes) were horrible offensively(88.6) and bad defensively (104.9) with a NetRtg of -16.3 In the playoffs in 101 minutes they were good offensively(113.0), but also bad defensively(113.9) with a NetRtg of -0.9 Team was (OffRtg 109.8, DefRtg 111.8 and NetRtg -1.9)

The reality is that Asik is such an offensive liability that you need a stretch 4 for spacing. Defensively Asik is a very good rebounder but he can be beat on the defensive board by quick leapers. He's a good rim protector if you go right at him, but he's not quick enough to be a good help defender. Guys like Howard, Davis and Ibaka are great rim protectors because they don't need to be sitting right in front of the rim to block or alter shots.

It'll be interesting to see where Asik ends up after this season. Miami next to Bosh might be a good fit.

Might not be working well right now, but on paper, that is a beastly front line. If they use him right, he and Davis could nearly shut down any front line. He is a much better fit w Davis than Howard, seeing that Davis actual has an outside game to allow for spacing.

It's best they suck this year anyways, west is too stCked for them to win now now. Get a decent draft pick this, oh wait, that's right, we have their draft pick lol. They better start sucking big time so they can get that protected pick...

Cleveland or Golden State could both use him. Asik seems to me like a more reliable version of Bogut. I feel bad for him being stuck in that organization...

    This is head scratcher.

When neither is on the floor, the defense is better than when one of them on the floor and only slightly worse than when both on the floor?

This just shows you that individual ORtg and DRtg aren't very meaningful.

Asik is the type of player that appeals to me as a fan. I wanted to love him so bad, but he just sucks. That's just a fact.

The problem is simple. Every player on the Pels aside from Davis and Asik is a horrendous defender.
