I dont understand this fascination with wanting to move Wink to the 2 postion He plays really well for a PG (dished out 6+ assists per game last year wich is pretty good for someone not named Stockton or Kidd). Not to mention the fact that he is pretty much going to have a different role with JVG running the circus. Yao is going to get more touches, and he is going to want Francis to pass first and shoot second. Defensively, we would be a HUGE and I mean HUGE liability at the 2. Can you imagine him trying to gaurd AI, Pierce, or Kobe???? He is going to get freaking lit up folks! Too small and not as quick as Cat. As for Mobes, how many times did we see him flat out shut down his man at SG last year? Anyone recall Iversons 1 for like 40 performance in Philly!?!? That wasnt all AI having a bad night. Keep the team the same, bring in some VETERAN backups to for leadership and toughness and lets roll with it. We have a new coach so a lot is going to change this coming year.
Among other things he is a poor passer and a poor playmaker ! But I expect he will improve in that direction! I thing he has a better chance at the Point Guard because his defence is too weak to Guard Shooting Guards ![But still a great player]
And he once hit on your ex-girlfriend! You forgot that, DrewDog. I guess you could say that "Wink" winked at your old gal.
Didn't want to quote Drews whole post, but I agree with every word. Stevie is an under-rated pg IMO. 6 assists a game is solid, especially for a ISO offense with no motion and nothing resembling a fast break. I watched him "make plays" during the All Star game as a point guard. I know, it's a bad example but at least he showed he's got the ability. Besides, he's too short to play the 2. No need for a roster overhaul.* I agree that veteran backups are the way to go. Let's see what our guys can do under JVG.** *except we need to cut Moochie **except Moochie
LOL! Moochie had a bad year. Im not ready to give him the axe just yet. Unless of course he dribbles out the shot clock again.....
I agree with you. I actually think Mobley is better for this team than Steve. You are right about Steve defense. I mean, the JR Bremers and Earl Boykins of the league light him up. whats he getting, the max,70 mill, right - the max for a guy who can dribble 2/3 of the shot clock and dunk and get 3 assists a game by throwing alley opps to Cato. I say make a big splash and send Francis packing somewhere so he can be closer to one of his business enterprises - isoH entertainment and AND ONE clothing- and instead pay a max player who out of respect to the organization he's getting the max millions from, lead the team out of the lottery, first, before starting anymore million dollar business ventures. you want me to pass you some hatersauce...
steve is NOT a bad passer. he's just a poor decision maker at this time. there is a difference. he relies alot on instinct and when things break apart he sticks with what he knows and that's taking it by himself. with a set system under van gundy i'm positive he can play the position like we expect.
Someone's excited! No, really! I mean, wow! Seriously, though, I'm in total agreement with everyone who believes Stevie's better suited to run the point than play the 2.
I'd just like to see what Steve is capable of doing when he doesn't have the added burden of getting everyone involved. It seemed like earlier in the season last season, when the team was a top 3 team, Steve was a scoring machine. He was leading the league in scoring for a while. Once he started altering his game and making a conscious effort of being a distributing point guard, his productivity as well as the team's record started to suffer.
no.. we pay hm max becasue he gives us 20+ pts, 6+ assists, and 6+ boards, and has time to do some fancy dunks
I think that the idea of moving stevie into the two spot would be with the intention of adding a bigger point guard who would guard the opposing two and steve would still guard point. Imho.
I think if any other coach had to do it again, Iverson would still be at the point. Why? If you look at Iverson playing the pg spot, he had more advantages at that position than he does playing the 2. Sure he won the MVP somehow 1 yr. but Brown basically cut 3 yrs off his career. At the pg, Iverson was 20pts 7 asst and 3 to's which is pretty good. If they help to add in Stack or Tim Thomas along with Ratliff and he probably gets more than that and now you have a potent team. Since Brown traded every lotto pick not named Iverson and wanted to quit every yr, the team is screwed with very mediocre players like Van Horn,Thomas,Snow and so forth. Francis isn't a great pg, just a good player who happens to play point. Once he's relieved of some of his ball handling duties, his to's will go down and he will be more effecient.
The thinking behind Francis being a 2, is because he is capable of scoring 30 points a night, i dont want to go into why he doesnt, there are plenty reasons why he dont get 30 points a night, and alot of them have nothing to do with him at all...(but that is another post, probably one from runninghorn)....bring in a legitimate PG, one who doesnt care or need to go off for many points... I want Francis with the ball with the clock running down and we are tied, or down 1... I watched most , or nearly all of the games last year, I didnt remember Mobley shutting down much of anything, sure didnt shut down Kobe....But hey that is my opinon, I dont think either guard (Francis nor Mobley) are that good on the defensive end.. maybe a PG with defense would help....
Whats the point of him scoring 30 if he's giving up 30? What about the nights when Boykins,Bremer and guys like that played Francis to a wash? We're talking about fringe players playing a all star to a draw. Imagine him playing against legit coming at you 2 guards in this league and they're cancelling him out. Where is our advantages now?
your right about him getting torched by bigger 2's , not being an advantage to us...but that has to do with him not being any good on defense, he isnt any good on defense at the 1 either, where gary payton torches him as well. Our guards, or current crop of guards CAN'T play D look at Eddie Griffin, so many are down on him right now, for his lack of heart or hustle, mainly his non-performance on O...but he gets his blocks and boards as much as the next Rocket...I think he is one of better defenders on this team, including Cato, Ming and Posey but back to Francis, I would like it more if he was the one trying to get the points, opposed to being the one getting everyone else involved,
