Personnel aside, what do you think is the best shot when there is around 1 second left in a game. Feel free to post videos (except one). Is it the alley oop? What about the catch and shoot three pointer? But isn't that exactly what other teams are expecting and looking to stop?

My theory is you probably won't get a good shot in this situation anyways, so if the alley isn't there right away then the play should be drawn up for a catch and shoot three (even though you only need 2 points to win). Teams are very hesitant to foul (three point) shooters in this situation.

Is there any way to get a good look from mid range with this much time or a layup without throwing an alley-oop?

any shot that you can get semi uncontested, it doesn't matter where on the court it's from unless you get out to 25 feet plus

My guess is that more often than not in the NBA, we see teams drawing up a play for 3, even when down 1.

I'm guessing it's a combination of the coaching staff having a few inbound 3 point plays constantly being worked on in practice (as opposed to inbound 2 point or alley-oop plays), as well as it being easier to get a semi-open look when spreading your offense out to the 3 point line.

If the inbounder is at halfcourt and you try running a play where the pass is to a guy inside the 3 point line, it's either going to be a lob, where the defense has plenty of time to recover, or a straight line pass where the receiver has to catch with his back to the basket (ala Fisher 0.4). Nonetheless, I know most teams will try to run a lob option anyways just in case the defense lapses.

a layup? why would it be any different then if there is 10 minutes left on the clock? layup is always the most efficient shot (as long as dorsey isn't shooting the layup)

By the same token, the opposing coach will get his players to focus on the paint to prevent any layups. It's a tough call, since each coach is betting what the other is planning. How often have you seen a coach draw up a play, the ball is about to be inbounded, but the coach calls a timeout after seeing his opponent's defensive strategy?

This is a rather smart play that was done under 2 seconds.

Give it to Lillard ... i mean Harden LOL

Set a screen so your best shooter can catch the ball cleanly, and then it's all up to him.

A Brian Cook shot. Position on the floor doesn't matter.

Fouls that don't get called happen too often on layups in the final few seconds, so unless you can fight through that it's likely the closest jump shot you can get with the least contest.

It'll likely end up being a 10-15 footer I'd say is the best shot.
