To my wife, "camping" involves showers, AC, electricity, privacy, and the comfort generally afforded in a cabin. We're looking to take a short 3 night getaway at a nearby state park in late January and the $80/night cabins in Bastrop State Park caught my eye. I realize there's a good chance that they're already booked, but all the same I had some questions.

    • How is Bastrop State Park since the wildfires?
    • And, are there any other state parks near Houston - with cabins - that are fun to go to?
We would like hiking/biking/swimming at our park. (I know we're going at the wrong time of year for ideal conditions, but these parks can still be fun in the winter months.) Looks like we could get what we want with Bastrop, and since it's less than 2 hours away from our house in Houston I'm biased towards it. So I was hoping someone could provide me some insight on great camp grounds with cabins for reasonable prices.

(Yes, we could always fall back on The Retreat at Artesian Lakes, for example, in Cleveland, TX but it's more than twice as much per night than Bastrop and since they've sold off more than half the park to private residences, it's hardly the value it once was back when it was called "Chain-O-Lakes" so I'd rather go somewhere else.)

Any advice and input would be appreciated. I haven't been to Bastrop in at least 15 years and the only other state park I've been to - Huntsville - has no cabins.

    Thanks!

They are great but I prefer the ones at Inks lake....I have a 37.5 foot RV that my wife won't go near...lol...she wants the cabins too.

Bastrop is still pretty bad I'd imagine. Went by there last year and there were still thousands of burned trees that they hadn't taken down yet. You can definitely see the regrowth and the replacement plantings though, so they are slowly making progress.

There's a great park next to it, literally next to it. Buescher State Park. They stopped the fire right on the border of the 2 parks, so it's totally untouched. Very cool, pretty much a before and after shot. If you pay to enter either park, you can go to both, there's a park road that connects them. They have cabins and a small lake, canoe rentals and fishing. Not sure if they allow swimming of not.

After the breakup of the band DeYarmond Edison, a relationship, and a bout with mononucleosis, Vernon left Raleigh, North Carolina, and moved back to Wisconsin to spend the oncoming winter months at his father's cabin in Dunn County, Wisconsin.
