    L.A. Clippers make qualifying offers

    Posted: Wednesday June 25, 2003 9:29 PM

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Clippers made qualifying offers Wednesday to Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Andre Miller and Lamar Odom, all of whom will become restricted free agents July 1.

Such offers are required in order for the team to have the right to match any offers the quartet might receive.

"These players are an important part of our team," said Elgin Baylor, vice president of basketball operations.

The Clippers can begin negotiations with the four players July 1 and can sign any of them to contracts after July 16.

Center Michael Olowokandi, guard Eric Piatkowski and backup center Sean Rooks are eligible to become unrestricted free agents July 1.

Darn it. I guess that was expected. I was holding out hope that they wouldnt file for Odom or Magette.

Well, they'll be stuck there for another year and then can be free.

Although San Antonio and Denver can try to sign Maggette to a decent contract, and the Clips might not match. Maggette has gotten better and better.

Depending on how many of these guys take 1-year deals, it could be a very good move to have cap space next offseason.

For another other team but the Clippers, yes.

It's not guaranteed they take one year deals, though. Several of them may go out and find bigger deals - Maggette in Denver or San Antonio, Odom in Orlando or Miami, Miller in Utah, and so on - and force the Clippers to either keep them at the higher salaries for a longer time period or let them go with nothing in return.

Wouldn't be shocked to see all of them sign at nearly the same time and the Clippers only keep one or two of them.
