Anthony Peeler - a good candidate for the Rox 3rd guard?

This is an excerpt from ESPN's article breaking down the Cassell/Johnson for Peeler/Smith trade:

The Big Three of Milwaukee are no more. In less than a year, GM Ernie Grunfeld has shipped off Glenn Robinson, Ray Allen and Sam Cassell. This move comes as no surprise -- the Bucks have been seeking a deal for Cassell since the trade deadline and last night's draft selection of point guard T. J. Ford put the writing on the wall.

Coach George Karl grew weary of Cassell's on and off the court antics. Neither Joe Smith nor Anthony Peeler is expected to play a huge role. The Bucks will most likely choose not to exercise their team option on Peeler, making him a free agent on July 1. Smith will battle for minutes alongside Tim Thomas, Anthony Mason, Marcus Haislip and Jason Caffey at power forward.

If the Bucks just let Peeler go, man, I would be happy for Peeler to be our 3rd guard. If I'm not mistaken, he is a combo type guard that plays defense like a mutha. In the playoffs this past year, he was one of Minny's best offensive options.

    Two questions:

    1. Is espn full of it thinking that the Bucks will let Peeler walk?

    2. How much would peeler cost?

Actually I wouldn't mind Peeler at all. He's proven he can play defense and nock down the open jumper plus he's a veteran with plenty of experience. However, I don't know if we'll be able to offer anything other than the veterans exception seeing as how we're trying to resign Posey.

Damn, didn't know Cassell was traded till now. Those Bucks with the "Big Three" sure were a bunch of underachievers.

According to (the admittedly often asinine) Charlie Pallillo this afternoon, there is no way Milwaukee pays the 3+ mil that Peeler is owed under his current contract. He says he will likely be able to sign for no more than the vet minimum, which is I believe around a million-five.

I also thought about him as a possible pickup for the Rockets.. but I have never followed his game enough.. anyone have any kind of breakdown on the guy.. age, stats, style, etc?

I think this team is now getting to the point to where the most important acquisitions are not superstars, but solid role-players who are pros and can do the jobs asked of them. Peeler may be just the ticket...

I know this was sort of answered already in terms of the money issue, but you can think about it in terms of their roster, too:

    C: Przybilla, Gadzuric
    PF: Smith, Haislip, A. Mason
    SF: Thomas, Kukoc
    SG: Redd, D. Mason
    PG: Payton, Ford

Then look at the signs from the draft: they traded Keith Bogans, a SG, for cash, and they intentionally took a foreigner with their other second-rounder who wouldn't be over from Europe in a few years. The not-so-subtle message: WE HAVE ZERO ROOM IN OUR ROTATION. Why would they pay Peeler $3 million to sit behind Payton, Ford, Redd, Mason, Kukoc and Thomas?

    He turns 34 in November.

    Brief, sketchy scouting report:

Some similarities to Mad Max. Never had Maxwell's upside, not quite capable of his offensive outbursts, but similar skill set in a similar body and though more modestly talented much more consistant/stable (ie. not F***ing nuts). Also, a good ball handler, but not as good as Maxwell and doesn't slash to the hoop like Maxwell. Though he's often used as a gunner off Garnet kickouts, he's athletic enough and handles well enough to create his own shots without help. A bit selfish, I think. Maybe not selfish, just doesn't seem to know any role other than scorer and occasional defensive stopper. Has become a very legit defensive guy.

If Peeler can be had for 2 mil or so, it would be incredibly stupid not to get him. We need defensive help, and someone with an outside shot. Granted, if we can pull off a big name coup, let's do that.

However, if we're just looking to add the right pieces to our nucleus, we better take a hard look at Peeler.

I would be very happy to add Peeler to our team. He hit some huge shots for the Wolves down the stretch last year. He's a mature player who's been around awhile - exactly what a young, immature Rockets squad needs.

I think he's like 8th in the league in 3 point field goal percentage .41 and 11th in assist to turnover 2.98.

Also, I think Rod Grizzard, Cedric Henderson, and Isaac Fontaine all deserve a look. Their team recently won the Championship in the NBDL. These guys are gonna be hungrier, not to mention alot younger than Peeler.

Why would we have someone who's going to be 34 this year as our 'third guard'? I could see it if the team had at least been in the playoffs 'til now, but that's not the case.

Because guys like this help you win championships. Just ask San Antonio. Their bench included Steve Kerr, Steve Smith, Kevin Willis, and Danny Ferry.

He has proven that at his age he can still play good defense and can still nock down the outside shot. He was never the type of player to dunk from the free throw line and we're not looking for that type of player.
