FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- The brother of Detroit Pistons guard Mateen Cleaves was killed Sunday in what police said was a drive-by shooting outside a home. Herbert Cleaves, 27, was shot in the abdomen and taken to Hurley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. No one had been arrested by Sunday afternoon, said an officer who would not give his name. Mateen Cleaves showed up at the house after learning of the shooting but declined to talk to reporters. He was with his family later in the day, Pistons spokesman Matt Dobek said. The rookie guard joined the Pistons after playing on Michigan State's 2000 NCAA championship team. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo informed his team before the start of its game against Iowa in East Lansing, Spartans spokesman John Lewandowski said. ``Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cleaves family,'' Lewandowski said. ``It's a tragedy that nobody should have to deal with.'' Police said the shooting happened about 2 a.m. Herbert Cleaves and a friend were on the porch of the friend's house and about to go inside when two vehicles with two men in each pulled up and opened fire, Flint TV station WJRT reported. Police told the station they believe the gunmen were shooting at Herbert Cleaves' friend because of a recent argument. The friend escaped injury and was cooperating with police, WJRT said. It said police have identified suspects and were seeking them. Joyce Hunt was at home nearby with her daughter when she heard shots and hit the ground. Several minutes later, police drove up and roped off the house, she said. The sounds of gunshots frightened Tracey Johnson, 46, who lives six houses down. ``I was up watching television and I heard the shots,'' she said. ``I ran into my room.'' Johnson said she did not know the people who lived in the house where the shooting occurred because they had moved in only last week. ------------------ click here to see a legend Houston Rockets fun facts Kelvin Cato Enjoys Pretending to lead the league in rebounding and Injuring himself .
What a tragic waste of life. ------------------ Someone who is about to admonish another must realize within himself five qualities before doing so (that he may be able to say), thus: In due season will I speak, not out of season. In truth will I speak, not in falsehood. Gently will I speak, not harshly. To his profit will I speak, not to his loss. With kindly intent will I speak, not in anger. -from the Vinaya Pitaka
Why do such horribly horrible things happen to awesome people? ------------------ The best is yet to come. Go Rockets!
I hope they find those worthless pieces of sh*t and give them the needle! If your answer to winning an argument is to pull a gun and to kill somebody there is no way you should be walking on this planet. I mean this is just worthless garbage. I hope they enjoy burning in hell. ------------------ Dream a deadly Dream. . . [This message has been edited by RocksMillenium (edited February 18, 2001).]
