I've seen the Silver edition for $249 at Best Buy and Target. Better deal at Target because they dive you an additional GC. GoPro HERO3+ Silver edition, $249.99, and a free $50 Target GiftCard, Reg. $299.99
Why non-plasma? Plasma is STILL the best picture and refresh rate going. Darker blacks, generally brighter whites, and faster refresh (600hz). At least on Samsung, it's a thing of beauty.
Gamestop's ad is certainly underwhelming, thought that isn't anything new. Their B2G1 sale is now limited to games/accessories under $20, which really sucks. Lightning Returns & Tales of Xillia 2 are the only things I'll even consider.
I roll my tv out on my back deck and watch games on nice Sunday afternoons and my understanding is plasmas only do well in controlled light situations (not bright rooms or outside)
You're correct. Plasmas shine for better picture quality, but they do very poorly in lit rooms. The reason being they have a very reflective panel. If you're going to be bringing it outside, stick to an LED.
This generalization, like "burn in" and "ghosting" (other infamous problems associated with plasma TV's) - stopped being accurate about 6 years ago. These problems can only be judged on a case-by-case basis and have largely been eliminated, especially from higher end brands. The generalization that plasmas have superior PQ, produce the best blacks and allow for better viewing angles remains true in most cases. Plenty of plasmas do just fine in well lit rooms and most have screens that reduce reflection. It's almost as if the TV industry has been manufacturing the bias towards plasmas, maybe offering incentives to sales teams in order to push LCD/LED. It is obvious that manufacturers and retailers prefer to sell those types of TV's. Probably a higher margin. Most uneducated buyers probably take the Best Buy chatter as the end-all-be-all, carry-on, and pass that info along to friends, furthering the stigma.
Never mentioned anything about burn in or image retention. Those were things of the past that aren't present in today's plasmas. Add in the part where you can't lay a plasma down flat, while probably not the best thing to do but isn't as much a problem as it used to be. Plasmas can do well in brightly lit rooms, but definitely not outdoors and they won't beat an LED unless you compare a high end plasma vs. a low end LED. Manufacturers have stopped producing plasmas, too. This will be their last year. It's true that LEDs typically cost more, but that's the way the market is shifting, whether due to being objectively better or better marketing. If you don't believe me, read this: http://www.rtings.com/info/lcd-vs-led-vs-plasma. If you still don't believe them, you can just ignore all the other information on the internet and grab your tinfoil hat.
I own a Panasonic Plasma, the VT60. Unbelievable picture, can't go wrong if you can still find one of them for sale.
I mentioned burn-in and ghosting for everyone, not singling you out. In that link what is it I'm supposed to believe? That plasmas aren't being produced anymore? That is common knowledge. The Galaxy Note 3 has superior data transfer capabilities over the Galaxy Note 4 -- sometimes manufactures choose what's best for themselves not the end user so long as the end user can stomach it. It is what it is. The TV I use 3rd most is a Sony LCD (2 years old) with great PQ but it performs absolutely terribly in bright rooms. The era for HDTV generalizations ended a long time ago.
You would think you could find some sweet deals on a new set given they are discontinued by the manufacturer. I'm not really seeing that, though. I'm in the market for the best sub-$1K deal on a 55"-60" HDTV regardless of type. If anyone knows a sweet deal I should consider, then please let me know. I want to hang it on the wall in my workout room. So, it obviously won't be used very often given what room it is in. lol. I'm thinking about just walking into a Costco to find one.
The Samsung UN55H6350 55-Inch 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV is a pretty good choice for a 55 inch, at $897.99 on amazon.com or $899 at Best Buy, as long as you don't care about 3D
