Sounds like a sleeper pick because he was projected to be a 1st rounder. I just have a feeling that there is some reason other teams didn't take him. Remember last year before the draft, people were thinking Nashbar wouldn't be left on board when we get to pick the #15, but other teams passed on him. And it turned out he was not ready to play. Why do you guys think other teams passed on this Senagel guy?
Come on guys, he can't show pics of them or he would get axed! We don't want that! Now that we saved your job, could you give us some pics?
I'm finding some other chat rooms that feels like he might be a second round steal. http://insiders4.ezboard.com/fbasketballfrm3.showMessage?topicID=231.topic
Rockets take Badiane in second-round move By MEGAN MANFULL Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle After a three-hour wait, the Rockets were finally able to make their one and only move in the NBA draft Thursday night. The Rockets were without a first-round selection for the first time since 1996, and tried to make the most of their No. 44 selection by choosing 6-11, 230 pound Malick Badiane, a 19-year-old from Senegal. "It took us a while to get up to the plate this year, but I think we wound up with a real fortunate pick," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said. "Malick is very raw. He's only played on year of pro basketball. But he's very athletic, he runs the floor real well, he can shoot and shot block, and his offense is coming along real well." Dawson said he saw a lot of potential in Badiane, but his immediate impact is still unsure. There is a possibility that Badiane will remain overseas for at least one more year to hone his skills, but Dawson said he has not yet talked about that possibility with Badiane's agent. Badiane is expected to join the team next month for the Los Angeles Summer Pro league. "No problem, I can go there," Badiane said in a phone interview from New York. "I'm ready for it. I'm pretty happy. I hope to help the team." With Langen, Badiane averaged 11.7 points and 8.9 rebounds. He averaged only 23.4 minutes in 29 games, but proved to be a threat on the boards as he led Germany's second-division league with 258 total rebounds. Badiane grew up in Senegal and only joined Langen in April 2002. His raw talent was quickly evident, however. With his tall frame and long arms, scouts say he has a knack for snatching rebounds away from his body and also shows great timing in shot blocking. Langen is a farm team for the Opel Skyliners, a team in Germany's top division. "He's not played a whole lot of years of basketball," Dawson said. "He played one year of pro basketball and he made tremendous strides. We saw him a few times throughout the season, in two camps and in tryouts here. We felt that he'd go earlier." After nearly three hours of waiting for the 44th pick to arrive, Dawson worried about the pool of players they would still have to choose from. Dawson said he was pleased with the options the team had to choose from, however. The Rockets had kept their options open throughout the draft to trade for a higher pick, but Dawson said no teams ever called.
[1] Does this draft pick reveal what the Rockets are thinking in the way of roster moves via trade? Or was he the "best player available"? While all signs point to Badiane being a few years away (raw talent and contract issues), he could be a pretty competent back up if his defense is as good as advertised. [2] Assuming that this pick means something more, is it more likely that the Rockets are going to trade away a PF (Griffin) for a SF/SG/PG (Allan Houston, Latrell Sprewell, Eric Snow) or package a couple bigs and change to upgrade at PF (Elton Brand, Jermaine O'Neal)?
here is the interview from DaDaks link ************** Interviews Malick Badiane: "I don't know if I will enter the draft in 2004 yet" by Kris Santiago / April 1, 2003 There was an NBA scout in the game against Ulm and you had a great performance. What are your plans for the future? Do you consider entering the NBA Draft in 2004? Malick Badiane: I don't know it yet. I'll talk to my agent and we will decide what's best. I played in the States last year at the Global Games in Texas and at the ABCD Camp and I might go to the States again once the season here [in Germany] is over. Where do you see your strengths and weaknesses on the court? MB: I really like rebounding and blocking shots -- that's where I'm good at. But I need to gain more experience in my game. Everything is still new to me, as I came from Senegal just a year ago. Who is you favorite NBA player and which is your favorite NBA team? MB: My favorite player is Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves, but my favorite team is Dallas. I liked the Lakers last year, but this year Dallas is my favorite team. Why did you choose to play in Germany instead of going to a high school or a college in the States? MB: I visited some colleges in the U.S., but the [Frankfurt] Skyliners gave me the chance to practice with big men like Mario Kasun [41st overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft] and Robert Maras, and I learn from them. And the Skyliners really take care of me. They really help me to be a better player. What are your plans regarding the Senegalese national team? MB: We want to go to the Olympics, so we have to qualify for the African Championships in Egypt. That's why I will join the team in Senegal, where we will try to win the qualifying tournament for Egypt and then for the Olympics. Who do you think is the best talent out of Senegal who could become a great player, but is still in Senegal? MB: I saw Souleymane Camara last year playing at the African Championships and he's a great player. He's playing for Kentucky and he will go to the NBA, I heard. A good player in Senegal right now is Muhammadou Kadir Pene of US Goree. He's playing the two and the three spot and he's very talented but still in Senegal.

Yao Ming, meet your enforcer. If he does merely that task well, he's got a permanent roster spot. And if he turns out better than that, it makes Griffin/Cato more expendable, giving us more roster flexibility. I'm satisfied with our draft, pleased by the selection.
Well I'm happy too. If he's 22, who cares? What's really ironic is his "I want to get every rebound, and block every shot" coupled with the " but I can score" comment is a almost a verbatim quote Akeem made when he was drafted. No NBA scout would have said Dream had a reliable 15' jumper, and his post moves were knocked also. There are a lot of parallels that are just too funny. Well, he seems ideal to practice against Eddie, doesn't he? Even if he is older. I'm not nearly as down on Eddie as most here, but by these scouting reports we have a raw anti-Eddie. Especially with Riley disciple Van Gundy as our coach he's not likely to have a roster spot - unless a Brand-O'Neal-Sheed scenario exists. A best-available 44th pick that sings to Rocket's fans is a coup in itself.
