With all this talk of the RIAA's coming battle against file-sharers, thought it was a nice time to post this:

Anyone remember the first MP3 they ever downloaded?

Mine came about back in the summer of 1998. I was looking for video game MIDIs and found a site offering mp3s from Sonic the Hedgehog. So I lost my virginity to Spring Yard Zone.

I think I downloaded some kind of movie quotes... Caddyshack or something, I don't even think it was music.

Killin' Me Softly by the Fugees.

I used to IRC a lot, and I uhhh "liked" this female user in one of the channels, and she said she liked that song, so I downloaded it and make little bits of it for her.

The big letter "L" is still slowly coming off of my forehead.

    Wow, great thread :)

    My first MP3 was

Building a Mystery by Sarah McLaughlin

It was somewhere around early 98 when I downloaded it from a website I'd found. At that time, there wasn't really any sort of consensus as to how MP3s should be regarded legally and ethically. The best answer anyone had was that you can keep it for 24 hours as a trial. If you didn't decide to buy the album, you were supposed to delete it. I kept it for a few weeks then deleted it . . .

    Hello There - Cheap Trick

It was from a movie I was watching at the time. Over The Edge. Great movie, btw.

I take that back. Technically it was the test file that came with Winamp as Windows Media Player either didn't support the format at the time, or I hadn't upgraded yet.

First radio song I got was Centerfold.

Mine was the entire "Colour and the Shape" album by Foo Fighters. I was working at PDQ at the time and was really amazed by the speed of a T1 compared to my 33.6 modem.
