I wasn't watching Rockets basketball when Calvin Murphy played so I will give my vote to Matt Bullard. He was the closest thing to being automatic from the 3 that the Rockets ever had when I started watching basketball. He was laser like like Steve Kerr, but when he shot that 3, I had a good feeling it would go in. Props to Calvin Murphy...I knew the man was automatic from the charity stripe but I didn't know he shot 49% from the field...that's crazy
Reid actually used to frustrate me. He'd be good one game, and average the next. I keep thinking he was going to become our next super-star next to Akeem and Sampson. He actually had his own show on 20-Vision. Oh, well. Smith actually surprised me more than Reid. Smith was more consistent late in the game. Still, Murphy above all.
A pure shooter can shoot from anywhere on the floor....... That being said Murph has got to get the nod Murph over Bull only because Bull was mostly a three point shooter, Murph fired from anywhere on the floor
When the Rockets had Mike Newlan, Murph & Rick Berry was special. Murph & Rick were pure shooters while Mike was a streak shooter. They all shot 90% from the free throw line. I used to pray for the refs to call a technical foul on the opponets just to watch the mad scramble to the free throw line.
Cat mobley! All he does is purely shoot (doesn't mean it always goes in). Maybe he's also a pure moron for some of the shots that he takes...
Especially against the Rockets. Didn't matter what team he was playing for at the time. Bonifide Rocket-killer. I forgot about Mike Newlin. When he was on, he had a pretty sweet J if I remember right. I was just a kid.
calvin murphy..i don't think there's any question about it. he's one of the purest shooters in the history of the game, period.
As expected, responses are generational. Many of you never saw Calvin play and, of course, you would pick Kenny the Jet or Bull, but, if you had seen Calvin, you would pick him. He could light it up.
Reid actually had one of the ugliest shots I've ever seen, put the ball way back over his head and just sort of flung it at the basket. the fact that it went in pretty often doesn't change the fact it was an ugly shot...
What is the definition of a pure shooter? 1) Good form, good technique on jump shot. 2) Good range. At least out to 20ft, or better to 23, 24 ft. 3) High percentage. Good even with hand in face. Needs only a fraction of second and a tiniest opening to launch a shot. When he is on, he is unstoppable. If you use those criteria, you have to eliminate a few names. 1) Murphy was an excellent medium range shooter but I don't recall him taking many shots beyond 18 ft. Sweet Lew was good but his best range was 20 ft in also. 2) Bull, Price, Rudy, Kenny Smith, Horry, Reid, Newlin, Short ... could make a decent percentage when left open but they can be shut down with close coverage. They were/ are not in the same league with ... Glen Rice. He is not in top form now but he was/ is the purest shooter we have ever had. When he was on, turn out the light. Next are probably Rick Barry, Eddie Johnson. These good shooters all came to us a little past their prime!
murph. the most impressive thing about murph is that his shots RARELY, if at all, hit the rim. it was uncanny how murphy would almost always hit all net.
Man this guy had the prettiest shot, and it looked the same from the arch, from the base line or turnaround from the post. I just hated hearing Worrell shout Rainbow!!!!!!!!!! every time he shot the ball. j
