Asian Men Basketball Competiton might postpone

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/s/2003-06-23/1555474316.shtml

Fear of SARS, the ABA says it hasnt exclueded the possibilty of postponingthe Asian Men Basketball competiton scheduled to take place in this September in China. Yao is in China now trainning for this Competition. If it will be held at later date, like next January along with women's competiton that has already been postponed from this month, Yao could be called back during the NBA season,

Um, No! That would royally suck!

Anyone legitimately know the fine print of the Yao Ming contract? Do they have precidence over the Rockets in terms of calling Yao back during the Rockets season?

"hasn't excluded the possiblity" is the key phrase. I would not worry about it until something more concrete is announced. SARS has improved a great deal so I would be suprised if they postpone the tournament now..

I wouldnt be so sure. Postphoning internation competition is not
uncommon right now, expcially if it is held in China. I somehow have a feeling ABA might deciside to delay it regardlessly. As I mentioned the women's competiton has been postphoned to next January, and the east asian men soccer has been cancelled. China also has lost the hostship of women's soccer world cup, which was going to take place also in Spetember.
The Sina article pointed out that CBA might be able to argue the case with ABA and persuade it not to delay it. I am not too optimistic about that, this issue can be complicated if other countries dont want to send their athletes to China. The postphone decision might need to be made right now, and SARS fear isnt completely out of picture right now. And god forbid, summer months SARS might break out it again.

I would be shocked if it happened, but not surprised...just letting Yao know they still have him by the short hairs.

It is more likely for SARS to resurface in winter than in warm weather. So, push it to Jan. sounds stupid.

Great point. This is what I want to know also. I would be absolutely shocked if there were any provisions in Yao's contract that allowed him to be recalled during the NBA season.

However, I also wouldn't be suprised if this issue is not 100% covered in his contract (i.e. his contract I am sure says that the Rockets must make him available to China during international competition and vice versa; however, since international competition (China's anyway) is almost always held during the NBA off-season, his contract might not stipulate what to do in case something like this happened).

Can someone tell me when does the pre-season training camp start?

I read paper somewhere saying that the Asian Men Basketball Competiton will most likely be postponed, not push to Next Jan but late this Sep. That means the damn competition will not be ended until Oct. If the training camp starts Oct, then Yao will miss at least half of it, AGAIN.

That cound be huge for Yao and Rox.

Ugh, I hate Asian Men Basketball Competiton, only the championship can attend the Olympic Games.

Rockets training camp begins in early October. That would royall sucks if Yao missed ANOTHER training camp! We really need him in there for a full camp. It would suck to not have him for the summer AND no training camp.

However, I would rather have him miss training camp than a part of the season!

I would think that unless there is something specifically stating that China can call Yao Ming back during the season then China can not call him back.

It is my understanding of FIBA that international athletes under contract must honor the contract or they will not be able to perticipate in FIBA sanctioned events.

In other words, if it does not specifically state in Yao Mings contract that he can be called back during the season then China can not call him back. If they do then Yao Ming would not be allowed to perticipate in the ABA and if he did it would not matter because if China won they would still not be able to perticipate in the Olympics because FIBA would not allow it.

Perhaps Heypartner could step in and clearify this because he seemed to have a very good understanding of FIBA and its rules last year when we were debating if we should draft Yao Ming.

this post could be a good litmus test to see if Chroncile writers use this board as inspiration for their columns. Wonder if there will be an article about Yao missing camp in the next couple of days...

This is absolutely correct. The agreement the Rockets have with China basketball is that Yao will be available for ALL regular season and playoff games.

A bunch of paranoids here. SARS? What SARS ? I just came from China, and people don't even remember what that was. It was simply a big outside China media propaganda. It is like declaring the entire Houston metro area to be travel warned when someone in the 4th ward got rubbed and murdered. Relax, y all. Life is back to normal in China.

No reason to worry about it. WHO declared china SARS-free on Tuesday. Just copy-paste from an AFP news:

BEIJING, June 24 (AFP) - The World Health Organisation Tuesday declared
China SARS-free and lifted the last remaining travel advisory linked to a
disease that rocked the world, effectively declaring the global outbreak under
    control.
The UN health body said the chain of transmission of Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome in the Chinese capital had been broken and that the city
had been taken off the list of SARS-affected areas and was now safe to visit.
"This is a milestone in the fight against SARS in China and around the
world," Dr Shigeru Omi, WHO regional director for the Western Pacific, said at
a press conference in Beijing, the worst affected city in the world.
"As of today the WHO is no longer advising against travel to anywhere in
    the world."
Toronto and Taiwan are now the only two areas where the WHO considers the
chain of person-to-person transmission to still be occurring following the
removal on Monday of Hong Kong from the WHO list of areas affected by SARS
