    Kill the dog.
If you want to be careful just use cayenne.

    - report to Animal control so that the dog has a record. If the dog has done this in the past, the dog will be considered a menace.
    - get yourself checked and make sure you keep all the receipts
    - if your dog has injuries, get him/her checked and keep all receipts

Sue for reimbursement and it's up to you if you want to add emotional distress. Make sure the owner learns a lesson to keep their animals in control at ALL times.

Yeah, I would double check that the owner who called the one dog actually owns the pit. That dog could have just been following the pit around.

Once a pit and another dog came after my dog on a walk. I was able to back the two dogs down without any real trouble. But dogs wondering around being aggressive is really annoying and a blight on the other responsible dog owners.

    Either way call animal control.

When selecting your attorney, certainly aim high. Many top tier lawyers operate in the dog bite arena.

Sorry for the ordeal, OP. I agree that you need to call animal control. I wouldn't confront the owner. Bad pet owners tend to be ****ty people and the confrontation isn't worth the risk if the guy is a thug.

I would definitely carry pepper (bear?) spray from now on. That and maybe one of those badass Cold Steel walk sticks.

Too bad this idiot is adding to the people who have given the pitbull such a bad name that cops routinely shoot them in the dog's own back yard.

If someone actually owns the dog, it would be very easy to sue them
