You should have a debate with Lenny Wilkens. He wants to ban the 3 point line, arguing that there way too many specialized 3 point shooters, and that makes the game boring. Quite the opposite of what you say. I can´t say that i agree completely with either one. Kerr was a premiere shooter back in his day, but seeing him make those shots was boring as hell. Bird, on the other hand, or Mullin, were awesome. I´m not sure i agree with your point about the scoring being down. It really is, but how much of it has to do with better defense and how much it has to do with bad shooting can´t be properly measured. ------------------ "I have posted so much that what I say must be true"
I agree that it is painful to watch a 3 overtime 102-95 game and that the true shooter is becoming forgotten in today's NBA, but Mobley is far from having questionable motivation. He works as hard, if not harder than anyone in the NBA. ------------------ "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." - Gandhi
Scarface,I think you hit the nail on the head several times. It used to be a major defensive statement when a team would hold opponents under 100 points consistently. You have kids leaving college early all the time(along with the high school kids)without anything resembling fundamentals. The big money, marketing, etc.of the NBA has contributed to the lower quality of game.Another horrible result is the dilution of talent and drop in the college hoops.I used to love watching all those great players of the eighties. You can't fault these guys for taking the money. These days if you can do one thing well, you can make a lot of money in this league.Well rounded players are a rare thing and thats sad...the inability to knock down a J,shoot free throws, lack of overall uderstanding of the game are just afew of the myriad of examples.I think NBA players have so many distractions that it takes a true proffesional to manage it all well.Unfortunately, there are not as many around anymore. ------------------
I do disagree though about Mobes....like RocketsPimp said,he busts his ass and puts in the time.I think he has a high learning curve and is riding it.He has an extraordinary hunger...you can see it...dangerous thing when combined with work ethic and bigtime talent. ------------------ [This message has been edited by hardwood (edited January 10, 2001).]
Dell Curry? I totally agree with you with regard to the lack of shooters in the league today. Can't really think of too many great shooters...But part of the reason why the scoring went way down also is because of the better defense in our league as a whole...teams focus in more on the defense today because it wins championships as they say...great defense have and will always shut down great offense...that applies to any sport. ------------------
I agree that defenders have gotten better. The shear size of these guys is amazing, with the advances in daily nutrition and science, and the money that the game produces leads to personal trainers and whatnot, the players are 100% more athletic than they were even 20 years ago. However we havent geneticaly engineered a human yet so I can pretty accurately say that defenders are not the only ones getting the athletic traits in there DNA. No its just that shooters are becoming an indangered species. Can you honestly tell me that todays game can even compare to the games even 10 years ago? Man the worst team in the league back then was Denver Nuggets, but man you had to score 120 to beat them so it was a lot more entertaining to watch them. Would anyone rather watch Portland and LA today instead of Boston and Detroit or LA and Houston in the 80's? I would rather watch the NFL(damn you al del flecto) than to watch the NBA today. Before I didn't have a preference because both were great. Out of all the people I have talked to only generation Y prefers the new school NBA versus the old school. ? ------------------ "We need to fockass".....Dream back in the day

I don't know why people insist on high-scoring games. I'll admit, watching a 62-56 win is pretty frustrating, but watching a 140-134 win is just as bad. If odds are when a team goes down the court that they will score a basket, where is the suspense in that? When the league shoots in the 40%s, then it is an accomplishment when the ball goes in and more fun all around. If the league is shooting over 50% all the time though, it starts to be like watching a lay-up line. I liked the basketball of the 80s, but I'm liking the basketball of the 90s and the 00s too. ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary Gafford Art Artisan
Although defense is definitely better, there is still a definite lack of young great shooters. There are still a few from the older generation of players. Scarface, how could you mention Tony Delk and Matt Bullard among the league's best shooters but not mention reggie miller or glen rice? ------------------
Rice can´t shoot a bullseye the size of Madison Squared Garden to save his life these days. Better keep him off any list of shooters. ------------------ "I have posted so much that what I say must be true"
Francis and Marbury the TWO BEST? Have you not seen Kobe Bryant this year??? Other than that, the NBA truly is horrible in every facet of the game. Question is how can we make it better? ------------------
I agree with Wilkens, I suggested that they get rid of the 3 pointer last year, and got hammered for it. I think the game needs something to get people moving, I would also legalize zone defenses. I would widen the lane, and maybe reduce the shot clock. Otherwise, I think the NBA's actually on an upturn compared to the way it was, say in 1995. It needs a dominating, marquee player or two, but I don't want Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter crammed down my throat. ------------------ "Thirty-seven?" -Randall, Clerks www.clutchtown.com
What about Reggie Miller, Chris Mullin, and Allan Houston? ------------------ This is ktfirstbsktof01. I changed my email address, and I put it in the profile thing. I agree totally. I gets old watching a team bring the ball up and dribble for 18 to 20 secounds before taking a shot. Drop the shot clock to 20 secounds instead of 24 and we would see scoring go up just because there would be more shots taken in a game. Widening the lane is also would help people like Steve, Kobe, Vince and even Cat. There would not be as many big bodies clogging up the middle when ever they drove to the basket. I would like to see what the avg feild goal percentage in the 80's was compared to now. I bet there is not that much of a difference. ------------------
to make it really really high scoring and make the fg percentage go way up while you are at it, lower the goal to 9 feet If you do those things though, the better players will play less minutes coz they get tired more easily and we'll be seeing more 9th and 10th guys off the bench, which will make the less exciting wouldn't you think? ------------------
A couple of thoughts... First off, defenses are FAR more sophisticated today than they were even in the early 90's. That, as much as anything, has resulted in lower scores, lower scoring averages and more boring games. To combat the agressive defenses, teams shoot longer shots because it is harder to rotate and prevent those shots. Also, with points at a premium, the three is valuable. Second, I think that many of us overlook the fact that we are really in-between era's. The Olajuwon, Jordan, Malone, Stockton, etc era is just now ending. The next wave of players like Garnett, Bryant, Francis, Kidd, etc. are just now hitting their mid to late 20's. Players hit their prime right around 30. Look at Webber. It has taken him until 28 to really reach what appears to be the peak of his game. Same goes for Shaq. Players don't shoot as well from the floor but free throw percentages are up suggesting that fundamentals aren't completely down but rather defenses are just stronger and more agressive. When a team takes as much time in practice figuring out how to shut down a team as they do working on their own offensive schemes, you can see how it could slow things down alot. No, this isn't the high flying 80's but the league tends to get a bad rap. It's similar to the off-the-court problems we read about. Those have been happening since the league began. The difference is that the press now reports it and didn't used to. ------------------ The way to use life is to do nothing through acting, The way to use life is to do everything through being. - Lao-Tzu
Also, I haven't seen mentioned the fact that Hakeem was considered a punk when he came into the league. He threw elbows, got T's and was generally a jerk on the floor. He learned. By the way, why is it that offense is the mark of a great league? Does anyone really want layup lines as someone else put it? ------------------ The way to use life is to do nothing through acting, The way to use life is to do everything through being. - Lao-Tzu
