Maybe the kid has a condition like Myasthenia Gravis or something where they need to lie down and sleep sometimes for medical reasons?

Possibly, but the blanket and pillow is disrespectful to the dear teacher. In my country, he would receive at least 40 lashes for bringing shame to school.
