I'm not sure if it was mentioned before http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/10/agent-lance-stephenson-was-very-close-to-joining-mavericks-in-free-agency/
As a Mavs hater, I would much rather the Mavs have Parsons for the max than Stephenson at around 9 mil. That would have made for a much more intimidating team, especially with the extra cash they would have had for other pieces.
According to the article, they were almost sure Houston won't let CP slip away, their plan A was Lance
Dallas didn't want parsons no matter what they say, Cuban wanted to screw Morey and the rockets over at any cost. I don't know for a fact or anything but I truely feel had we got bosh we would have let CP go anyways and still got Ariza. Ariza came in a sign n trade for asik. I'm not cap expert but I think this was the plan the whole time. A team of Bev Harden Ariza Bosh Howard Is the best defensive team in the NBA even with harden defense not improved At all. That team would have spacing on offense for harden to do his thing and 4 shooters around dwight while in the post. Ariza is better fit with or without bosh but had we landed bosh I still think Ariza is In houston over CP. CP sucks and I can't wait for everyone else to know what I knew 2 years ago. This guy is flash In the pan and will be a overpaid contract by yr 2 of that contract mark my words.
No way to fit both Bosh and Ariza. In order to get Bosh, you had to use Asik, Lin and extra pieces (probably Dmo or Jones). And we got Ariza because of the cap Asik gave us. I thought about that scenario too. Sign Ariza then don't match Parsons and use that money for Bosh. But the only reason we could have resigned Parsons by going over the cap was due to Parsons' bird rights. The only scenario I could think of that could have netted us both Ariza and Bosh would be a sign and trade for Parsons with the Mavs to generate a 15 million TPE then use that TPE on unguarantees then trade those contracts and whatever else for Bosh. If Morey could have pulled that (if it's even possible), those moves would have been more impressive than getting Harden or Howard. Effectively netting Bosh and Ariza for Lin, Parsons, Asik and whatever else was needed for the Bosh trade. Just rename Executive of the Year the Morey Award and call it an offseason if Morey did that.
I really think we should of signed Stephenson, IMO he's better or just as good as Parsons and at half the price.
You guys are drunk. We could easily have had Ariza and Bosh. Sign Bosh and then bring Ariza into the Asik or Lin TPE. We had to ditch them both for nothing, so would have had 2x8.5m TPE.
Stephenson would've been nice, so glad he's not a Mav though. In Charlotte he can thrive, here he would've taken shots away from H&H which would've not sat well with them + McHale could never keep a guy like that in check.
No. You can't have both cap room and exceptions like the TPE and the TPEs count against the cap. Let's say you the cap is at $63.2 million and the team's salaries are at $60 million, plus you have a $8 million TPE. In that case, it's not possible to sign a player using caproom because $60 million + $8 million brings you over the cap. You could however renounce the TPE, then you could sign a player for up to $3.2 million, but the TPE would be gone. That's why we would have had to renounce the TPEs in order to get Bosh.
Mavs would have been way better with Stephenson than Parsons. Stephenson is a better all round player - a triple double threat with above average D and hard nosed.
