I heard that VC might be brought in for a look to help mentor our young guys, since he is a "champion builder". I'm sure he'll provide pop and chips for the fellas. Even though most of our guys would want "pot and chicks".

btw - I sure could go for a box of cereal while burning my CD's.

I certainly hope so. He'd be a great addition to the staff. I hope it's not that you just heard me asking for it earlier.

    My coaching staff would include

An experienced assistant to help the head coach with the guys and x/o, offer advice and help game decisions = Van Chancellor
A big man coach to help with Yao and Eddie = Kareem Abdul Jabaar.
A small man coach (skills, dicipline, etc) = Mario Elie

I hope you're right. Van would be a great addition.

Where did you "hear" this? Or is this just speculation in that mind of yours?

Van can't even develop young players for the comets. he's a good X&O coach but not a great mentor.

Van would be there to help JVG just as the other top teams have a brain trust to get the best options. "Player development" should be the Big man coach, Mario jobs, with JVG oversight.

How about John Lucas as a point guards coach?

He could focus strictly on Steve, Moochie and whoever else they draft/sign.

plus we need an assistant with some head coaching experience, so we don't get into another larry smith debacle.

why would a head coach of a successful team that has won 4 championships leave that job to become an assistant on the rockets. There is no way that would happen and is a bogus rumor.

Yeah I agree Chancellor's a good X and O coach. But in no way is he cut out for the NBA.

Steve Francis wouldn't have lasted as long as his point guard as Jennifer Azzi did. He is neurotic about point guards and centers, and wouldn't give a flip if Yao averaged 15 shots a game throughout his career.

A young Akeem couldn't have dealt with this guy at all. Steve Francis would just say I'm out of here if he was ever in earshot of half of what I've heard Chancellor say from the Comet's bench.

I'll even go this far: if the WNBA was a thriving league with ever increasing revenue and the players had half the freedom of NBA players, he couldn't coach in that league.

You may as well be suggesting that Bobby Knight and Sheryl Swoopes would have hit it off at Tech if he'd been there. Or even now they go out to dinner together and get cranky. That would be one restaurant I wouldn't want to be in.

Wasn't Van a good coach at a university?

Not that the two correlate (obviously that's not true in the NBA), but wouldn't he at least have to be decent at developing talent?

And, just to be clear - I don't like the idea of having him as an assistant coach.

Vannie was head coach at Ole Miss for 19 seasons. You gotta bring the goods under that kind of pressure (dealing with a bunch of women). He even played two years of basketball at East Central Junior College in Decatur, MS. He's definitely an odd duck, but he seems to have his sh*t together.

What kind of stuff do you hear coming from the bench? Is it derogatory?
