I think you might have been getting steak at a seafood place....that might explain the problem.

People rave about Eddie V's steak. I had it once because of that. It wasn't as good as people say.

My friend owns the Vanity Lounge right across from it and I've been there a few times and honestly didn't know it was considered a seafood place, thought it was for steaks mainly. Every time I went errone ordered steaks. Either way, I've had their steak and their seafood and I wasn't impressed at all with either. It's a "geezer with money trying to find his future 21 year old wife at the bar" joint, just like Mo's. It's called Mo's ho's for a reason.

Also forgot about Trulucks! Best fresh King crab legs in Houston by far. I'd add The Reef in there too. Their Redfish on the half shell is amazing.

I don't eat at the fancy pants restaraunts unless it is for restaraunt week. That being said, two of my favorites that haven't been mentioned are:

    Branch Water Tavern (Heights)
    Bistro Alex (City Centre)

Also, RGD is good for brunch, lunch, and dinner...just has already been mentioned.

Branch Water Tavern is closed I'm pretty sure. It might have moved. And I'd call that area Washington or Rice Military but Heights probably works technically.

Yup, closed last year. I wouldn't call it the Heights though. I can buy alcohol on this side of I-10.

Ya, I just remember looking for somewhere to eat while in the Heights and recall it being in that area (across i-10 somewhere). But ya, Washington would be more correct. In any case, you knew what I was talking about :)

Anyhow, bummer that they closed. Very nice whiskey selection there..

Went to oxheart. For a 100 bucks they could give you more food. You could feed a village for that much. Food is good. The place was packed so the guy has a good business model, but I felt ripped off.

What's a good place that's not fast food but won't burn a hole in your wallet?

Eculent in Kemah is expensive but worth it for a special occasion.

The chef is incredible and it's a full sensory restaurant.

As the courses change, so do the lighting, music, and SMELL of the restaurant. It's amazing and very intimate.

Michaelangelo's on Westheimer (still probably looking at $50-75 without wine)

otherwise if that's too much you're probably looking at a lot of Mexican food places
