    Sudden Impact posted ...

David Aldridge from ESPN reported that the Rox wanted to get into the Jermaine O'Neil sweepstakes. He said that it is reported they may offer Mobley/Cato/Taylor and a future 1st round pick for a sign and trade for O'Neil. He also said that JVG was thinking of moving Griffin to the 3. Aldridge also said that Les wanted to make a big splash entering the new season.

The likelyhood and appropriaateness of this deal were discussed in 6 pages (so far) of detail. That is not what I want to discuss here. The part that caught my eye, and I would like to hear your responses to, was the last sentence. Somehow that seems very believable to me. Les has had a history of big offseason news. Drexler, Barkley, Pippen, Francis trade, Yao draft, and two championships. Even in his first year Les wanted to make a deal and land with an impact. He trumpted about bringing in Mario Ellie, who I was not familure with, but came to like.

Right now sales are slow, and a big splash has to be a good idea from a busienss standpoint.

So, let's assume we "lose out" in the O'Neil sweepstakes. Does Les just quit there, or does he look for another splash. Remembering that we have months to kill between now and tip-off, if you were the owner, what splash would you try to put together?

don't know who, but i think he would look to get someone else if the price was right.

    It's O'Neal, not O'Neil. Same as Shaq.

Les - If you want to make a splash, bring home another trophy. We need to add people like Elie and Thorpe - not the biggest names but without them (even with Hakeem) we might still be wanting.

    From Art:
I agree with you, but I don't disagree with the premise. I still think Rudy's departure portends moves some don't suspect or wouldn't approve of.

Most of us are pretty hard core here, of course, but the average Rocket fan isn't necessarily going to be juiced by Van Gundy, and I still hear most casual fans talking about not liking the team. Even if not a necessarily informed opinion, I hear and now believe I've "seen" Les listening.

It is obvious the current Rockets team does not have what it takes to make the playoffs. Mobley-Taylor-Cato and a #1 for J. O'Neal, I would do in a heartbeat. If we could land a PG via trade or FA signing (Kidd, Payton) this team would become an immediate threat to win the west.

As for Griffin moving to the 3, he basically has been a 3 in his 2 years.

    This team needs a shakeup.

In this basketball economy any team is capab;e of making a big splash.

Personally I would be happy with Les' 1st big splash being repeated, the acquisition of one or two good, solid players not necessarily superstars.

    Good thread, actually.

i think everyone would love elton brand but it's the clippers so only god knows what they would do. He's exactly the type of player the rockets need

    Rasheed Wallace.

Would Griffin and Rice do it? Portland could use a little cap relief. You gotta consider, with the luxury tax, Rice would mean 18 million to their bottom line.

There must be some deal where we can acquire Rasheed Wallace and Jeff Mcinnis. It would be the most amazing thing if we got those 2 players. I'd bet this team could win 55 games if we got that deal done somehow without trading Steve or Yao. Basically, how would we get Rasheed? because, Mcinnis would be a throw in from Portland's side.

I think a 3-way would do it, and if we got those 2, I'd be willing to give up Mobley, Griffin, Rice, Cato and MoT (any combination).

    How about this trade:

    Houston

    Glen Rice
    Mo T
    Griffin

    for

    Rasheed Wallace
    Jeff McInnis

    Portland

    Rasheed Wallace
    Antonio Daniels
    Jeff McInnis

    for

    Glen Rice
    Calvin Booth
    Brent Barry
    Joe Forte
    Vladimir Radomanovic

    Seattle

    Brent Barry
    Calvin Booth
    Joe Forte
    Vladimir Radomanovich

    for

    Maurice Taylor
    Eddie Griffin
    Antonio Daniels

One future pick (2005 or 2006 top 5 protected) should be transferred from the team which YOU PERSONALLY THINK comes out best to the team that YOU PERSONALLY THINK comes out worst in this deal.

    Thoughts?

I agree totally. The casual fan does not like the current makeup of this team. However, those I have talked to do not like Francis. They do not like his “me first” attitude, etc. Nor do they like Mobley and his “stats first” attitude. I am a little in agreement but, this team is not going anywhere without at least one of them.

Really? Mobley 5 years, Francis 4 years and still no playoffs. Maybe you meant this team is not going anywhere WITH them?

There are some trade possibilites out there, but whether or not Houston wants to make them is another story.

O'Neal would be great for our team. I would rather try to trade somewhere in the first few picks, like with toronto or the heat, to get TJ. But back to O'Neal, he would be great as our 4 and a bodyguard Yao. We could move Griff to the 3, if he isnt in the deal. I think he should be a 3 anyways. So he may not get as many blocks a game, but we are probably talking about taking .05 off of his per game percentage. He only shoots 3's anyways so why not keep him out at the line for the majority of his minutes. He's too skinny to bang with the big guys right now. Think of that line up - Yao/O'Neal/Griff/Posey/Francis. Thats scary.

Why would any team want McInnis? The next teammate who likes playing with him will be the first. That is why he got to Portland in the 1st place. Wit-less was looking for yet more disfunctional Blazers.

    mobley's been to the playoffs.

and we should get rid of our two best players the last 3 years before this b/c they've had no help, we've had tons of injuries, and been in the best conference in league history?

Yeah, I fogot how Mobley led us to the promised land his rookie year:rolleyes:

You're right, lets hang on to these 2 so we can make more excuses as to why the Rockets never make the playoffs.

Kind of hate to answer my own post, but I am really interested in your answers. Trying to steer you on to my track. If you want a splash I don't think a draft pick, a role player, or an unproven talent will impress the average fan. I am thinking free agent or trade.

Rasheed Wallase seems like what I had in mind. Gary Payton would draw fannies. Miami and the Clippers seem like teams trying to make trades, though I don't see La letting Brand go. Pity. New York needs to shake things up, Minnesota may be willing to take a chance. Utah is starting fresh. Who else is looking to make changes?

I see our best trade bait as Cato, Mobley and Rice. Les thinks we have dynasty talent, so I don't see him letting our core go. I get the impression that Van Gundy is a coach and not a GM, so I don't see him driving this action. I see it as being Les and publicity driven. Maybe a guy like Rice when he went to NY. Over the hill, but still a name and the expectation of a few years service left in him. Ideas?

Re the spelling of O'neal - sorry gang, I just can't spell a lick. I am sure my mom gave me a three letter name so I would have a chance. I copied O'niel from the original post. Didn't know if it was right or wrong, but at least I could pass it off on someone else. I'm willing to chip in on a spell checker.
