Don't shoot the messenger, guys - just passing on what Insider is saying today!;)

    New York Knicks

    Sprewell
On the Block: Latrell Sprewell, Kurt Thomas, Charlie Ward
The Skinny: For the past three years every potential Spree trade scenario has been hashed and rehashed. We're not going to get into all that here. But one trade rumor bears mentioning. A deal to send Spree to the Rockets for Cuttino Mobley and Glen Rice could be in the works. We know that Rice bombed the last time he played in New York. But the cap relief would be nice, and it would free up some space for the Knicks to take a top notch small forward like Maciej Lampe.

    Thoughts?

i don't understand why new york would do this for "cap space". sprewell's contract is up in '04. why not just let it expire, if you're trying to get cap relief?

Who would you all rather have, Spree or Houston? If we had to give up Cat and Rice.
I would rather have Houston but he might cost too much, we gotta resign Posey.

    OTOH,

if spree's contract is up in '04, we could just let him walk. then we could move francis to the 2 guard...this is assuming that we acquire a point guard to groom for this purpose (*cough* tj ford, please *cough*). hmm, that could be interesting.

i'd do it, only if we knew we were going to acquire a point guard like ford, as well.

How do we acquire Ford when we just dealt our 2 most valuable tradeable commodities (Cat and Rice's contract) to get Spreewell.

    RIET,

    eddie griffin.

if griffin = shareef abdul rahim trade value wise, it's not inconceivable that he's enough to get tj ford + something else. i'm not so sure i'd send eddie over, though. i really do like him & yao together. i'd have to think long and hard about this one.

latrell averaged 16.4/3.9/4.5/1.38/0.3 while shooting .403/.372/.794. he had 2.3 TO and is 32 years old.

cuttino averaged 17.4/4.2/2.8/1.3/0.5 while shooting .434/.352/.858. he had 2.3 TO and is 27.

why do i want sprewell straight up for cuttino, much less while losing rice's 9 million in cap relief?

i don't want any knicks unless their name starts with k and ends with urt thomas.

and did anybody else just find out it's spelled sprewell and not spreewell?

if you do the deal, you do it because latrell's contract expires soon (which allows you to move steve over to the 2 while grooming a 1), and because he is a great defender who likes to get up and down the court, and has a good midrange game.

all told, you do it as a part of a grander scheme. not as a singular move.

oh, and you are right on the $$$ about kurt. kurt would be wonderful to have on our squad.

Im sure if the rumors were true, Atlanta wouldve wanted or needed glenn Rice's contract to make it work.

Heck, if Griffin could get us Ford, I'd do that independent of what happens to Spreewell.

Griffin hasn't shown me anything to prove he's worthy of a top 5 pick.

Id take this lineup in a second:

    Yao
    Mo Taylor
    Posey
    Francis
    Ford

    6th Man: Mobley

    RIET,

i've thought long enough about it. i'd do it. griffin for ford. yep. i don't believe in sending bigs for smalls, but i think ford will be a team changing player...the motor that runs the engine. i'd absolutely HATE to get rid of eddie, but in this case, yea. i would.

Thats a fast backcourt with Posey too, Yao and Mo need some conditioning to keep up or they may be camping out on the defensive end.

Just because we have their old coach, why do all these analysts think we are going to bail out the Knicks from all their past mistakes? Wishful thinking...

Latrell needs the ball in his hands to be effective. This is the reason we're going after Elton Brand and it's the reason we're trying to dump Mobley in most trade scenarios.

Unless he's 24, is a 20/10 player, has room for improvement, and makes close to 50% of his shots, we don't want someone who demands touches.

Latrell Sprewell? Are you kidding me? My God...

I think I'd rather have Allan Houston and his 100M dollar contract.

The only player I'd like from New York is Charlie Ward. but only so we could trade them Mo Taylor, and then terminate Ward's contract for $2M.

CLOSE THE THREAD!!! francis 4 prez summed it up perfectly right here. Cuttino = Spree - 5 years and a lot of money. It would be a terrible trade for the Rockets. Unless we're getting a true point (or a 2 that's an upgrade over cuttino) or a banger/bruiser power forward, why should we even talk about trading Cat, Griff, Rice, Nach, etc.??

verse, I don't see your reasoning... you keep mentioning that we could let Spree walk... but like derrrr, we could let Rice walk... you don't have to pay someone to take Rice from you.

Taking a Miami player and their pick is far more attractive (ie E. Jones + #5 for Mobley + (anything other than Yao or Steve)).

I am sure not so sure about EJ's contract. He is a veteran but I think his foot injuries are going to be a problem for the Rockets in the future.
