After watching this year's NBA finals.... Even though it was really ugly..... We need to stop tallking about the Rockets making major block buster trades that bring in more black holes to our lineup... The Rockets need to bring in ROLE PLAYERS!!!.. THe spurs championship run was based on Duncan and a whole bunch of role players. Rather than see Jermaine oneal or any otehr big name big money player.. We need to bring in guys to do the dirty work that we know Steve won't do... players like PJ BROWN a former van gundy player... or Brent Barry.. or any other shooter, rebounder, or defender would be nice. How bout BRUCE BOWEN.. No more balll hogs.. More defense. Taylor or Mobley one of them have to go....
You are right that any winning team needs good role players but isn't it interesting that the team with the best player always wins the championship?
Good role players are hard to come by these days. There has been too much expansion, teams can barely field 5 decent starters. I wonder if Eddie Griffin would have been a starter in the 80's? How about Cuttino Mobley?
that's not true. the only time that is true is when you have one player who is absolutely HEAD AND HEELS above the rest of the league. that player does not exist in today's nba. really, is there a huge difference between these players: tim duncan shaquille o'neal chris webber kevin garnett you can rank them however you want, but there is not a "clear cut" #1 in the bunch. so, when it's like this, it becomes a matter of x's and o's, matchups, coaching strategies, and good old fashioned luck (sometimes bad....webber getting injured in the playoffs for example). think of it this way...during jordan's glory years (6 titles in 8 years), was he definitely a better player than olajuwon? i don't think so. head to head hakeem's TEAM usually beat jordan's TEAM. but as fate would have it, the two great players never met in the playoffs. the rockets couldn't beat seattle (who did not have a better player than olajuwon on their team...go figure ). and during the rocket's 2nd championship, jordan and the bulls were knocked out by orlando...who did not have a better player than jordan, either...unless you think a young shaq was better than jordan at that point, which i do not). you're oversimplifying this matter. the truth is that the championship team will usually have a top 5 player on the team, yes. but they also had to get the right matchups along the way. would we have 2 titles if we have to play seattle in 94/95? nope. would jordan have 6 title if he had to play houston 6 years? i don't think so. would chamberlain have 11 titles if he didn't have to deal with russell? probably so. but those things don't make the best player. that's individual. nba basketball is "TEAM". sorry for the rant, but that's a comment that many people make that really, really irks me.
One of that moster would be Shaq-like, but 4 inch taller, 380 pound, 3% body fat, thick toes ankles knees and ass. Can you imagine that? That will be the "Waterboy" on a basketball court.
If the best player always wins championships why didn't the Lakers beat the SPurs this year. THay have Shaq and Kobe and all the SPurs have are role players along with Duncan... Role players make the team. When the Rockets won in 94 we only had hakeem and role players. We need to go back to that.. Because we already have a solid 1 2 punch in yao and francis, we don't need more stars to come in and take up all the shots.. and money.... Players like Ginoblili and Jackson.. best player can't beat 5 decent players. that's what was proven this year..
