Or maybe the Mack Brown regime was so lenient on its players that they literally have no accountability? Reading between the lines, Estelle was booted for failing yet another drug test. The guy has been suspended and is basically on the football version of probation and still couldn't lay off the green. Sucks to lose our most talented/experienced lineman, but good riddance.
Or maybe the problem is the players. According to this, Estelle would have been kicked out of the university long ago, but only got multiple chances due to Strong. http://texas.scout.com/story/1454501-details-of-kennedy-estelle-s-dismissal?s=110 Selected quotes: The first week of September, I reported Estelle and Desmond Harrison told Charlie Strong they had a problem with substance abuse/addiction, and Strong went the extra mile of getting them into rehab supervised by UT personnel. The two were separated from the rest of the team and have not been practicing while going through a substance abuse/addiction program. But they were allowed to remain on scholarship, which had to be cleared through UT administrators because, technically, for the scholarship contract to be honored, a student-athlete has to be actively participating in their sport. ... Those inside the program said Estelle's attitude toward football just deteriorated over the past couple years - that he seemed more interested in trying to start a rap career than spend the time necessary to improve on the football field. Sources told HD there was serious doubt inside the program before the season about if Estelle and Daje Johnson could make it through fall camp and into the season without another team rules violation. There was thought that Harrison would get it together, because he tends to follow the behavior of the people he's around. And it appeared Harrison was on the right track. ... Multiple sources told HornsDigest on Sept. 4 both Harrison and Estelle, projected starters at offensive tackle, had committed team rules violations involving substance abuse that called for automatic dismissal under university policy for student-athletes. Estelle, who had 9 career starts, played in the season opener against North Texas Aug. 30. Harrison has yet to play in a game this season. But before the university dismissed Harrison and Estelle for good, Strong wanted to allow them to maintain their scholarships at UT while they went to school and also went through rehab. And Strong got his wish. ... "Charlie expended some of his political capital on this," one source close to the situation said. "The school was ready to dismiss these two (Harrison and Kennedy) for repeated violations of school policies. "But Charlie fought for these kids. So they will have nothing to do with football for the next six weeks. They will continue to go to school and try to get their lives in order," the source said. ... Sanders and Meander were charged with raping a co-ed in Meander's dorm room during the summer. Sanders faces an additional charge of improper photography. Strong didn't wait for the legal process before dismissing both. ... Sources said Strong argued that instead of dismissing them, sending Harrison and Estelle back to the streets, where they could fall through the cracks, that they instead be allowed to remain in school and go through rehab. Perhaps if we had players interested in football instead of raping people or stealing playstations or substance abuse, the team would be better. I'm OK if we lose the recruits that think "no drugs" or "no stealing" is too problematic a rule to live by - I'm pretty sure there are enough good recruits out there that can live with that.
Looks like the Strong regime may take awhile, unlike the Sumlin magic. It is where you end up long term that counts the most.
I think both tend to lean to the stricter side but neither one is a drill sergeant. Strong has had to cut a bunch of players loose because things were that lenient/relaxed under Mack Brown.
I typically don't mind undisciplined players to an extent, football doesn't have to be a drill camp, but it was clear that Mack had let the resort atmosphere get out of hand. Somebody had to come in and take out the trash. Ultimately though, everything will be determined by the on field results, and unless he can recruit or develop a good QB, nothing else will matter. If he does, and he wins, recruits will still come.
You really don't get it do you? Its not like EA sports NCAA 2014 - you don't just look up who has the highest star rating then autosim your way though Dynasty mode. This is what Mack Brown thought he could do. Un fortunately the number of talented recruits expanded while the number that he could have on scholarship remained the same, thus leaving him no advantage/margin for error as he was caught up/surpassed. Guess what this is about - winning an extra game or 2 and going to a less mediocre bowl, or installing a process?
I think it's only fair to give Strong a period of time to set up his system and recruit. In my opinion, he should be given three years before his job performance is evaluated critically. I understand those who disagree: "this is Texas, so we should win now...etc." My hope is that by building a foundation of players who believe in his principles, Strong will create a winning culture again.
What in the world does that have to do with my post? Someone used a current Texas commit decently rated (4 star, NOT 5) as an example of a guy who is not afraid of Strong's system. It was worth noting that it was not Strong who recruited him. The conversation was about Strong's ability to recruit good players. Mack not making players live up to their potential has nothing to do with it. Also, do you think Alabama turns down the 5 star recruits that don't "fit in" or whatever you want to call it? Schools go after the best players. Strong needs to be able to recruit the best.
What does that have to do with my post [STAR RATING 5 STAR STAR RATING SOMETHING BLAH STAR RATING RIVALS.COM STAR RATING]? Everything. 5 stars. Would read again. *****
Are you high right now? The guy is a 4 star recruit. Good. Not Great. He isn't the best player in Texas and would not be a part of your critique.
Except that I am a highly repped, 11 bar poster with Hakeem status, and you are just a lowly 3 bar nobody, according to the repping services. Why should we even listen to you?
Bad comparison. Rep is highly correlated to number of posts. Recruiting ratings have no such direct correlation to volume. Sorry to break it to you, but your rep is meaningless.
Thanks for breaking it to me - but it's a ranking system. Statistics tend to indicate that while individual high rep owners may in fact be terrible (Carl Herrera, nouveau), a high proportion of the most beloved posters (Clutch, KingCheetah, moestavern19, Carl Herrera, ancien) - have in fact achieved a high rank. In fact, you are far more likely to find iconic BBS Hall of Famers among the top rankers - the 4 and 5 stars if you will, than toiling away in the low rankers such as yourself. Granted the hit ratio is not 100%, but it's proprortionally much higher. Does this correlation sound familiar to you, to any other ranking system, that is being held up as holy writ in this thread? Look closely. I will rep you if you are able to discern the metaphor, and your ascent may begin.
If you can't respond to my posts in public then just don't respond, person who whines in my rep. I don't need your comments nor your rep points honestly. Zero ****s given. What I posted was just an observation and I didn't even know why the latest dip**** got kicked off the team. I'm now up to date, thanks and errthing.
