I heard on 610 that Evil Stern will allow the Grizzlies to pursue relocation possibilities. They have till March 1st to file notify the league. St. Louis is the front runner to get the Grizz. If local business in Vancouver want to buy the team they will have the first option. The owner of the team said the team stands to lose 25-50 million dollars!

What the heck are they losing money for? Hurry up and ship us Raheem to start cutting costs! [IMG] [IMG]

Actually, this is bad news for any possibility to get Reef, at least until the summer. The popular opinion is that the Grizz won't make any moves in order to maintain the franchise's value for perspective ownership groups/cities. I think they'll try to convince Reef to give them one more year to turn things around before they trade him or anyone else.

I wonder if St. Louis really will be the front runner. If the owner isn't willing to sell the team to Bill Laurie, moving to St. Louis may not be any better than staying in Vancouver. Laurie owns and controls Kiel Center (or whatever they're calling it these days). The revenue opportunites for a team not owned by Bill Laurie are pretty limited.

In this case, a smaller market like Louisville or Oklahoma City might be more profitable for the Grizzlies owners than St. Louis.

Of course, I keep reading about some guy who wants to buy the Grizz and keep them in Vancouver. Some Asian businessman, I think (or he wants to market the team to Asia or something like that).

I don't know, I am convinced at this point that the SAR trade has fallen through. We have heard nothing about it one way or another for the longest time now.

Louisville might be a good place for the grizzles because basketball is really popular there.

I hope they come to Nashville. That way I don't have to travel to Atlanta, or back to Houston to catch a Rockets game. It doesn't look good though. The local papers here are saying the owner of our hockey team would charge an arm and a leg to rent out the arena, and they don't think attendance would be that great.

Nashville is a weird place... I've seen guys with mullets driving around in mazeratis there.

You know Heisley is going to have to be treated like a god before he moves anywhere. Certainly he'll have guaranteed tv money, a free lease, the works.

This is a franchise that's really going to move, not like the Hornets, Rockets, etc.

Nashville sucks Achebe. There are mullets everywhere. The weather is better than it is in Texas, but that's it.

New Orleans looks like a good fit with a new arena with no NHL team.

The only problem is corporate sponsorship, size of market, and ticket sales.

Here are the odds that Foxsports gave concerning the relocation. New Orleans is the best bet.

And the fact that many don't consider the New Orleans arena to be an NBA quality arena. It does only have 44 suites.

I just don't see it. It's a struggling market with a declining corporate base and an arena that has few of the revenue opportunities that NBA owners seek. They may end up with the Grizz, but Heisley is going to regret it very soon after moving there.

If Sacto can support a team then I think Austin can. They can build a new arena where the old airport used to be. Too bad Dell's going through a rough period. I think it'd be cool to have 4 NBA teams in TX like CA has.

Any NBA team would have to compete with that 800lb-gorilla called the University of Texas. I don't know about y'all, but I'll side with the entity than can get TXDOT to reschedule an IH-35 shut down toduring the morning rush hour so as to accomodate traffic from a football game.

Plus, Austin hasn't proved to be a hotbed for basketball in the past.

A paper in Vancouver is reporting that Heisley has agreed to sell 50% of the Grizz to Bill Laurie and that the team will move to St. Louis by next season. The princials involved deny such a deal exists, though.

Is Columbus or Nashville just a college town? No. Why should Austin be?

Before building a new arena trying to acquire a pro sports franchise, Austin should focus on its major traffic problems.

Attendance at UT basketball games hasn't been great, but I feel like disinterest is only a minor part of the problem. The problem is the Erwin Center. If UT moved their basketball games back to Gregory Gym (even with increased capacity - lets say the size of Hofheinz Pavilion), the building would be packed every night.

The other problem especially for students is the draw. Basketball draws occur a couple of times a week, and Belmont is too far to walk to.

I think there is a significant difference between Austin and Nashville. The colleges involved are significantly different. I've never thought of Vandy as being the equal of a UT.

That's not to say that a professional sports team in Austin wouldn't work. I'm just saying the Nashville analogy is weak.
