ugly as it may be, the set shot does have its merits. just look at what it did for james posey at the end of the year. posey's form changed overnight from a slingshot jumper to a set shot; and his shooting % went up dramatically after that.
Agreed! Posey was a heck of a lot more dangerous at the end of the year when he got his shot down! Heck he was the only consistant Rocket on the team over the last few weeks.
didn't JVG say that he wanted to bring in assistants that are familiar with the city and team? it seems to me that mario fits that bill perfectly and also appears to have a (great?) relationship with Stevie. anybody familiar know if JVG or anybody (CD? Rudy?) might have made contact with Mario?
*cough* extension *cough* extension Hopefully he will continue to improve and we won't hear Bill Walton with his infamous line after a brick, "Ouch. Watch yer face."
Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents about Mo-T... The guy was banging with the big boys at the end of the season. It was at that time that he was finally rounding into shape and not thinking about the achilles anymore. Im looking forward to seeing him on the court next season, especially with that hook shot.
I remember during the 15 game streak to start the 93-94 season. The Rockets were in Utah and we were down by one...I think. Rudy called a play for the newcomer (Mario Elie) to come off a screen and take it to the basket. Mario was fouled...and he hit both free throws to win the game. Talk about clutch...
Yeah Taylor was banging for those 3 rebs a game. I don't care if they bring Bill Russell in here, Taylor will always be soft. The guy has been in the league since 97 and has been pretty much the same soft 4. If the Rockets could sign and trade for Zo using Taylor, I would do it in a heartbeat. He's soft with a ok offensive game and a poor rebounder and post defender no matter how you cut. I have yet to see a guy who was soft , all of a sudden turn into this monster.
Elie would be good in that he is a VERY INTENSE player. He has a passion for the game, and I bet he will have a passion for coaching and it'll rub off on players. He was the guy who came up with "Never underestimate the heart of a champion." He and Kenny Smith were the ones who pumped everyone up before a game and made everyone serious and passionate about winning: something a team like us could use. Second, the guy will be a fan favorite considering he's done so much for our championship runs. Other than that, I dont know how experienced he is but I think he would be a good assistant coach: a nice project that could be a great investment for Van Gundy.
Being an intense player, and inspirational speaker, and being able to coin a cool phrase doesn't make you a good coach. We don't need a cheerleader as our 4th bench coach, we need a teacher and someone who can break down video. If he can do that, I'm all for it, but as Jeff pointed out, is he going teach our guards to shoot set shots? j
With MoT's wide body, he should bulldose everyone in site, just make sure it's not offensive foul! I think Mario can have a roll in the coaching staff!
If it came down to a choice between Ewing and Ellie I would go with.... Pat does have some coaching exper., but its ?ed how much did he realy do. He is thought of being the one to tutor Ming but is that a good thing. And oh yah he's a Knick. Super Mario might be a better choice
