After the offseason he had, he better not laugh until he gets the third star he's promised. He can build up their market value and then let them walk without any compensation? He may as well be bad at drafting second rounders. Look, I like Morey. I think he's a good GM. But, with all the sunshine some people are trying to blow up my ass rationalizing how great everything he does is, I keep finding myself having to bash the guy. The team did not utterly collapse and we'll be good next season, but this was a bad offseason. Even if Cuban did overpay for Parsons, Morey still messed up his free agency. Maybe it was a duel in which they both shot themselves.
I chuckle at the fact that you're throwing Jason Terry out there like that's the trump card. Jason Terry is old and irrelevant. The trade was Generic Nonguaranteed Contract for Generic Expiring Contract and Two Second Rounders. It has nothing to do with Mark Cuban, but it is still a nice move.
You cannot make players sign here. So the whole thing about striking out on the big names should not count against him. So that means the only real debacle was the Parsons thing. No matter what, teams could over-pay Parsons whether it was this year as a RFA or next year as an UFA. There was nothing Morey could do about that. So the options were to pay him or not pay him. Clearly, Morey made the right choice by not getting locked down by signing him. Morey didn't do anything wrong this off-season apart from maybe not signing players you personally would have signed if you were in his position. But he plays his hand as well as it could have been played.
Thats cool Ill take 2 previous winning offseasons and a reacquistion of assets over 2 losing offseasons. You people need to chill. 2 major signings in 2 offseasons got yall thinking rockets are suppose to nab a major player every year. PAtience.
I'm a huge Morey fan, but if he'd known what was going to happen, he could have turned Parsons and other assets into Rondo, Love, or something like that. Aside from that, he played his hand very well.
Regarding Parsons, Morey had a third option: take the fourth year option and then trade him. Either there was an under the table deal with Parsons' agent, as some have said, or Morey just miscalculated Parsons' value on the marketplace. I understand wanting to keep Parsons happy by not taking the option, but if you believe he will be overvalued on the market (or at least more than the Rockets would be willing to pay) , you have to take the option and then trade him.
This Can't really blame on Morey 1. Miami offering aging and regressing Bosh 5 year max as their best player 2. Dallas offering role player parsons a super star trade unfriendly max contract 3. No team wanting Jeremy Lin to give up at least some value in return
Oh god, even reputable posters are becoming site cancer. Morey made all the right moves this off season. Would you honestly change anything he did? It was the FA that you should be upset at if anyone.
Only way he gets the last laugh is if we are the last team standing (champions). If we bow out in the first round along with Dallas, no one got the last laugh. Let's just hope we make it further than them.
followed up a horrible op with a more horrible post. wish i could give negative feedback/rep haha -pk
I think the Mavs got better and the Rockets are worse or maybe the same. They certainly didn't improve the roster.
I'm not willing to be defeatist just for the sake of it. If it's a terrible offseason, we can't say that yet. We need to let all of our unknowns pan out during the season, and THEN make a judgment call.
At the beginning of the summer, if someone had said we would lose Parsons, Asik, and Lin, and we would add Ariza, Terry, Dorsey, Adrien, and Papanikolaou. I don't think many would be laughing because they are happy.
The Rox may very well be a better team this season. I also expect them to get out of the first round of the playoffs. With that said, water under the bridge I know, but there is no way Morey should've let Parsons, Asik, and Lin go with basically nothing in return. I consider the pick they received from NO and the pick they dealt to the Lakers to essentially be a wash. Yeah I understand Bosh's decision left them hanging but in hindsight throwing all their chips in just left them vulnerable. At the very least they could've had a few extra assets at their disposal to make a big trade if they hadn't lost Parsons for nothing.
He also carried Kobe and Pau Gasol on his back. Since we got him, Trevor Ariza is a rich man's Lebron James.
He's the GM. If players don't wanna play here then it falls on the GM. Stop lowering the bar 1)Retaining Kevin Mchale 2)Letting Parsons become a FA 3)Over pursuing Bosh 3)Choosing D-league trash (Joey Dorsey)over proven veterans that were available at the time
We have had a poor offseason so far but the deals DM put together DO have potential. 1. Cuban DID hamstring himself considerably signing Parsons with a totally untradeable contract. Funny how he characterized this as sticking it to the Rockets. 2. Trevor as a replacement for Parsons is an unknown quantity. Trevor had a career year last year. 8 of his 10 years in the league featured average and even poor quality play. (i.e. his stint with the Rockets was quite poor and most of this forum wanted his head). 3. I don't think getting Terry was really 'sticking it' to Cuban. Terry as a player might not pan out. 4. I also agree the 2 picks were not sticking it to cuban. The 2 picks however are valuable and Gee was not going to play so we gave up nothing for Terry + 2 2nd's. Good deal by any measure. So in conclusion IMHO Cuban basically stuck it to himself with the Parsons deal but that's basically all that has happened.
