If he is a great point guard, can be a great coach and is willing to coach the rocket, I do not see any problem having him as a rocket coach. He has a knowledge to give and rocket players need that knowledge. Plus He is no longer a Jazz player. The same sinario goes for Ewing. This attitude of having faulty pride to the point of refusing to learn from a good source only will hurt the students. (in this case the rocket players)
I agree. We should be glad that a center as great as Ewing could spend some quality time with Yao. Remember, Hakeem has stated in so many words that he wanted to take a break from basketball and enjoy his "new" life. Life as a Muslim with his family. I doubt that Hakeem would want a "full time job" in basketball right now. Also, I believe that there are a lot of former Rocket players that would have their chance to coach, and CD and staff will make sure they have first consideration. But at the same time, Jeff will need to put together a core group of coaches/assistants that will help him coach the Rockets. He has to be comfortable in hiring the right people and CD knows this is important too.
Yall acting like some b*itchs over something you have no control over I dont give a damn who the rockets hire as long as we win.
Whoever said that Ewing did a ****ty job with the Wizards didn't pay attention this year and spent all their time writing up ridiculous trade theories. Jahadi White was injured the whole season except for the first and last months. Kwame played great basketball at the start of the season and then faded out. No amount of teaching could help him. Of course he'll do good next season and even better when they trade him in 2005.
patrick ewing is a future hall of famer and probably one of the 10 best centers to EVER play the game. from what i'm reading here it seems like he's some sort of cba reject. if he never steps foot in houston, fine, but if van gundy has confidence in him i'd like to think he does have some teaching skills to offer.
Kwame said in an interview that he was basicly ostrisized by coach and player alike. That includes Ewing. Now I know it isn't always smart to beleive everything that this guy says, but like you said, he was playing great at the begining of the season before his coaches and teamates benched him. I'm sure during the season he could have recieved some motivation or help from a hall of famer like Ewing. It's almost in his job description as a former allstar/icon to help "pass the torch." Maybe Ewing has a supeiority complex and only deals with future "super stars," and he didn't see that type of play from Brown. Or maybe he felt that Brown was too hard to teach; too hard for a hall of fame center to give a few pointers or few "good work Brown's" to help him get along. Then again, he may have nothing to do with any of this, and its just my "Heart of a champion" bursting out. Anyways, Kareem, Ellie, Smith, Moses, or even Starks (who is already has experience in coaching) are much better coices for this team right now.
early on in his career Ewing is a physical player. You can't compare Yao to Brown/ White/ etc. Ewing's job in Houston is NOT to teach Yao the game. Yao's knowledge of "the game" has far surpassed those of Jahidi / Brown/ etc. What Ewing has to do is to maybe help Yao learn a little position and make him understand the differences in the NBA from the Chinese Basketball Association. Yao needs to learn how to position and get it fast. And once he gets position in the offensive end, he needs to learn to keep the low post position so the ball could get to him. Also, Yao needs to learn the physical game that comes with some centers he will be facing against. If Yao can learn how to play NBA style and add in his own sets of skills, he'll be a force to be reckoned with
Candlegreen, thats what I'm saying also. Its like you have to get people who wants t be here and wants to help the team. I agree that Kareem would probably be better as a coach, but thats something that Kareem has to work with, but don't say that a player of Ewings skill and hard work can't help Yao. Remember some of those yrs Hakeem didn't make nba 1st team,Ewing was there. Ewing for his early career power, later had one of the sweetest jumpers from a big man. His jump hook was pretty good also from what i recall. He would be a welcome presence to our post players in general. I would rather Ewing teaching Ming and Griffin than Larry Smith.
For me its just the thought of hated rivals joining our team. Can you imagine if Stockton or Malone joined the Rox as a coach?!?!? I guess we all shouldnt care........ if he really wants to be here then so be it. Just like Barkley and Pippen (2 hated players that joined our team), we will learn to like Ewing once he shows Yao a thing or two. I guess if he is this motivated to be a coach, then whatever. Obviously JVG knows a helluva lot more about what an assistants potential is than we do. very very slowly growing on the idea........
How is Ewing a hated rival? The Rockets played ONE series against them and won. I can understand the hate with Pippen since he quit on us and Barkley with tenure with the Suns. The only three players I hate are Stockton, Malone and Payton.
yeah for real ewing isnt a hated rival.......hes just a guy hakeem took to school in the finals. of course it would be good to have moses or hakeem teach yao, but ewing isnt all that bad.
How come no one considers that maybe Kwame Brown can't learn? When he said in the interview that he was ostercized by teammates and coaches alike, I think that is a reflection on the player, not the coaches. He sounds just like a 19 year old kid making excuses for why he couldn't get it done. I hated Ewing as much as the next Rocket fan, but I haven't seen any other big man step up and say he wants the job. Ewing has. Sure there are better options out there, but right now, no one has stepped up and publicly (or privately) said that they want the job except Ewing. I don't think Ewing will hurt Yao's game, only give some insight from a 15 or 16 year veteran. I don't see how that can hurt Yao at all, especially considering where Yao has come from to play in the NBA. I just hope that Ewing donesn't have Yao going into any stripclubs, or subscribe him to the belief that "We make a lot of money, but we also spend a lot of money."
you people are stupid. so quick to bash everything the rockets do and you dont even think. theres no possible way a great player like ewing won't be able to help yao. also, none of yall cared to mention that ewing has not been a full-time assistant with the wizards, yet with the Rockets he would assume the role of a full-timer on van gundy's staff. ewing is a great idea...he'll help our big men. the rockets will be in the playoffs next year.
Keep Ewing out. What can he teach? He hasn't done anything other than put his foot in his mouth in the last few years.
My god, people, he's just an assistant coach. I refuse to believe that assistant coaches will make even an ounce of difference. He's just someone for Van Gundy to talk to
I think RH is right. After all we have a HEAD coach from Knicks. Imagine Knicks Head with Rockets body. We will definitely be the beast of the west.
