I don't like Perry, and have never liked Rick Perry. But since when is wanting to kick someone convicted of DUI out of state office a felonious offense? Didn't the Canadian legislature try to do similar with Rob Ford?
Read bra! He asked her to resign. She said no. He then decided to cut the funding to her deal unless she resigned.
It's not. If all he did was want to kick her out of office, there wouldn't be an issue. It was the methodology he used that was problematic. If Obama withheld highway funds from various states unless their governors resigned, I suspect that would be illegal too.
So he chose not to give money to a convicted drunk. I'm failing to see the problem here. Like I observed, I'm fairly certain that when Rob Ford refused to resign, the Toronto legislature/council implemented all sorts of pressure moves to try to force him to do such.
because she's a democrat in a influential position. if she resigns he gets to replace her with a republican.
Felonies? Nah it's good he's on my team and it doesn't fit the narrative I've created for myself. Obama did it anyway. Also lib pigs are bad and yeeeeehhhhaaaaaaaa boys the radio and fox tell me what to believe and who to vote for and there's nothing you book readers can do about it! Hillary and stuff y'all I'm angry! Who's down for a Honey Boo Boo marathon to celebrate Perry breaking felony cherry?
I got a kick a few months ago when his handlers told him to not wear boots with his suits. He complied, and also added in some hipster glasses to make him look extra smart.
Don't like perry but meh...she should have had the decency to step down on her own but whatever. Fire them both ...sounds like the best course of action.
When I first heard about Perry threatening a veto of the $7.5 million in state funding to the Public Integrity Unit, I told my significant other, who's up to her neck in state government, that it sounded like Perry was violating the law. Not by exercising the veto, but by making threats to the Public Integrity Unit in an attempt to force someone to leave their office. It doesn't actually matter who he was threatening there. It could have been Lehmberg, it could have been as assistant DA. Doesn't matter. It is the threat, the attempt at coercion that is a felony. Yes folks, you can complain about the Travis County DA getting a DUI. You can vote against her in the next election. You can start a petition drive, if that is allowed, to attempt to remove her from office. BUT, what you cannot do is use the power of your office to attempt to threaten or coerce a public official. It is illegal and it is a felony. Don't like it? Perhaps you should move to a different state, or a different country, preferably the latter, because that isn't how we operate here. It how dictatorships operate, and oligarchies. That's not the United States of America. I'm not defending Lehmberg's actions that got her in trouble. It was a very stupid mistake. What I am saying, and events will show that I'm correct on this one, that Perry, the idiot, broke the law.
I agree she was stupid and should be voted out of office. And she also acted like a complete idiot in that video, have some self control lady. But I think it is flat out hilarious that perry is indicted, and would dance a jig if he has to actually serve time in jail at some point.
Meh... Governor Big Hair says some insanely stupid things but don't fix what isn't broken. The Texas economy is INSANE... Hope for the sake of Texas he beats it. How much credit does Perry deserve? I don't know.
No, he chose not to give money to a state agency. The problem is that it's illegal to try to coerce a public servant for your own political purposes. What is so hard to understand?
Also worth noting that this has happened before ... in Texas, under similar circumstances. http://www.newsweek.com/texas-governor-rick-perry-indicted-coercion-265019 Perry's indictment is the first of a Texas governor since 1917, when the state's 26th governor, James "Pa" Ferguson, was indicted for vetoing state funding to the University of Texas over his objections to certain faculty members. Ferguson was was eventually impeached; he resigned and handed over the governorship to his wife, Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, who became the first female governor of Texas (she later won another term and served until 1927).
Lehmberg is an idiot and should have resigned immediately, but you can't coerce her to leave by publicly threatening to remove millions in funding to a program she is associated with. If Perry had threatened to hire a hit squad and have her killed would this make it a bit more clear why Perry's actions were illegal?
I really don't like the idea of Governors being indicted for vetoing legislation or curtailing funding of any specific program. And elected Democratic officials need to stay mum, co-mingling political alignment and criminal prosecution can always get muddied and disruptive, and set grudges and precedents for far too long.
Would hope Perry serves time in jail but most likely he'll find some way out of it. He is just too powerful here.
