Great interview. I liked how you clarified some things as well. The more I read about Yao, the more I like him. He seems very mature, humble, and sincere.

Yao can never be like Shaq, nor should he. But I hope that he doesn't feel like he has to be as powerful as Shaq to be as good a player.

man, you have to believe yourself first. that is why I think Yao would never out play shaq, cuz he didn't have the mentle edge to do so. but overall, great interview, it tells that Yao is just another human, like us, he feel pressure, scared sometimes too. but what's important is how he handle it and learned from it. in a chinese saying "if you want to be one of the best, you have to struggle mently and physically first" I think when Yao grow more and more mature, he would be one of the best player.

Wow, that guy really put the heat on Yao, you'd never see an ESPN guy grilling a spoiled american star like that

Not many people have done hundreds of interviews. I think there's good
reason that Yao's voice is "raspy." :)

I wonder if it means, "novice" or "a person that isn't very good at something."

Is that a closer Chinese translation? Just wondering.

I loved that part from Mobley. At least he knows the importance of playing all 48 minutes.
Yao probably wont slack off next year (before the fat lady has sung).

good interview (thanx for the trans). i just dont understand how yao can just blow off the summer league and training that he is missing while he is playing for the chinese nt who cannot give him any type of challenge. how does he expect to get better, just imagine it? really bothers me how people blast steve et al (or even shaq) for being lazy or undedicated but dont say $hit about yao up and a$$ing off to china. he is going to have to make a decision at some point: become dominant nba player or best chinese NT player ever

becasue Yao is playing for his country, a lot of US players refuse to play for US national team during the summer, because they think that is their vocation time. I think they should be blast.

You're talking like you're his freaking agent. Get off him already. Yao Ming has no idea who you are.

I know what you are doing.

You are jealous that Yao is being shared to the world.

So, you figured since it's a Chinese story, that it should stay a Chinese only story.

Yao has fans all over the world. Get used to it.

Give her a break. Newgirl is just a Yao fan and afraid of distorting the interview by traslation. However, sbyang did a great job on it. Afterall Newgirl is a respectable basketball fan:)

Then she should state that. And not come off like she "owns" Yao.

You sound like a typical Yao-only fan. He's a Houston Rocket , get used to it.

Thanks for the work translating sbyang! Yao's sense of humor always seems to be completly above the interviewers radar...which makes it even funnier. That being said, he seemed more open to this person than the typical US media boob asking the same questions over and over again.

YoYao: many people think that athletes owe them something or that they should be held to a different standard b/c they make an a$$load of cheddar. why is this so? these guys are like anybody else except for the fact that the industry for which they work makes mega-bucks which in my opinion should go to the athletes rather than the owners. if i played basketball for 9 months straight save a weekend break i wouldn't be ecstatic about having to spend the little off time i have playing more ball regardless of the situation. i dont spend my vacation working off the clock and i doubt that many of you guys do. if shaq or kg or whoever WANTS to play for the US team then great, but they shouldn't be spoken bad of for not wanting to commit themselves to something like that. you shouldn't throw stones.......

Well! So many times, I have seen people complaining that there are too many Yao's stories on this board.
Those people claimed that this is not Yao's message board but the rocket messsage board.

I think that Newgirls was trying to not bother those people.

Posting Yao's story and you will be labelled as Yao's only fan. Not posting Yao's story, you will be still labelled as Yao's only fan becuse you are too selfish to share Yao's story.

    ;)

That being said, I think that every Yao's story is realed to the rocket sice he is a rocket.

Thanks sbyang for translating and posting it.
