I don't buy their meat. I enjoy going through the International section and picking up stuff from other countries that I'm not familar with, just to check it out and see if I like it. Walmart is on my boycott list as well. A new Walmart food center opened on Hillcroft in my neighborhood. I walked in and left disgusted. Their prices are no better than anywhere else, and the quality of the meat and produce didn't look very good. And I agree with you...WalMart is driving many businesses out of business. I refuse to spend a dime at any WalMart.
Whole Foods - Alabama/Kirby Kroger - Buffalo & Westpark Central Market Pete's Fine Meats Rose's Seafood in Seabrook Anybody know a good seafood shop inside the loop?
There is one in a strip center across the street from the Park at Vanderbilt Apartments on Brompton between Braeswood and Holcombe. It's good, but it is very expensive. I would stick to the seafood counter at Central Market.
Wal-mart's meat does suck.....but Sam's club has GREAT meat. All of their beef is USDA choice. If you're going to cook a bunch, I highly recommend checking out their case prices.
Amen.....their seafood is superb! Where else can you get five or six different kinds of fresh salmon?
You are correct Sir!!! Whenever I'm throwing down a huge BBQ at my house for a bunch of people, I always look first at Sams and I'm usually able to get anything and everything I need. I love the (relatively) new one at South Rice Ave. and Westpark.
Yep, that's where I go. I like to support local merchants like Pete's Meats though, even if it is a bit more expensive.
Ya gotta love Pete's smoked peppered bacon (ain't that right GreenVegan76!). I also like to check in on them to see what's on sale. One time they had whole NY strips for like $5.49 a pound which is a ridiculously low price. My Dad and I went in 50-50 on one and we had Pete cut it into steaks for us. Each of us spent about $30 and each of us got 6 el-muy-primo inch thick 16 ounce New York Strip steaks. Ya can't beat that with a stick! Poor Pete, though. RIP, Pete.
1. QFC - but you got to have the advantage card 2. Fred Meyer 3. Costco - only every other month 4. Pikes Place Market - if 'm in the area
This is one thing Houston has over the Bay Area, it's much easier to find an excellent grocery store close in Houston.
Dude, read the freakin' subject will ya? Nobody cares about your rain-drenched, anarchist loving, chic-non-underarm-shaving-dirty-hippy, inferior pacific northwest crap. Jeesh.
I have to give props to Super Target - aka Archer Farms Market. (esp the one on S. Main) They have good products and good prices. I like their house brand stuff. That fish market on Brompton is J & R Seafood. It's very good and they're helpful. They buy some of their stuff from Southwest Seafood - a local wholesale distributor (on Gulfton). If you get an account, you can get really nice restaurant-product. I think they may have a retail end soon, in Bellaire. I buy meat at Sam's Club - usually a whole ribeye roast or tbone, and have the butcher cut it into thick steaks for me. You get the bulk price - no upcharge - just have to flag the butcher down. You can also get good stuff that's about to hit the "sell by" date on discount. Find out when they do a lot of cutting and time you trip. Hint - they usually like to cut a few days before the weekend rush. Just cut the questionables off - presto - tender aged beef. Yum. Never had a problem.
I can't remember the name, but it is right next to La Panier Cooking School .... I've gone there once or twice and was reasonably satisfied. I like the seafood counter at Whole Foods at Kirby and West Alabama. Earlier this week they had fresh Copper River King Salmon at $12.99 lb and fresh Copper River Sockeye Salmon for $11.99 lb. Smoke it on the grill with a little alder ..... mmmmmmm. If you tell them you know rockHead, they give you a discount.
One place I didn't even mention is Spec's Liquor Warehouse downtown. I don't drink alcohol, but they have one of the best sections for spices, cheese, pasta, etc there is in town. You can find tons of good imported stuff there and you get a cash discount.
well when i'm in Houston (thus not at UT where i have to buy my own food) I go (actually my family does) to the Kroger Signature store at Kuykendahl and Louetta. better than the randall's right outside the neighborhood or the one right across from kroger's and better than the fiesta by 45 i believe. i usually only go along if we shop right after church but it's a nice place. huge and clean, tons of stuff to pick from. all the pastries and cakes right up front that make me want them so bad but i just have to keep walking (after many a long glance and yearning). the one downside is the Healthy Choice french bread pizzas cost more than at the HEB at UT (but at least it's not my money when i'm in houston). i'm pretty sure that my blood has now been replaced by the sauce in those pizzas. damn they're good.
You guys know of any stores downtown that offer frozen fruits? I've gotten hooked on the whole blending thing and I never can seem to find a place that regularly sells frozen fruits (variety packs) for blending. Right now, I just purchase the fruits and cut&freeze them, but I enjoy having the variety that the frozen fruit section usually offers. I need a store in the 3rd ward area... PS - Super Target is awesome.
I hear ya. I was just wondering if you worked at the one near my house (S.Post Oak and West Bellfort). If you did, I would definitely come stalk you. Not only that, I would harass you until you gave me a monster discount on a case of Coors Light!
