Why do people continue to say Parsons can create his own shot?

Yeah Parsons cannot create his own shot. I totally agree with the OP. Ariza can do all of those things for half the price. The only real concern is ballhandling and playmaking, cause that's what Parsons could do pretty decently. So we need either Ariza to get better at those things, or get a PG that can do those things.

Oh and Parsons is dead now. NBA Dish please!

Who cares if he is 4 years younger. Not like the team will keep any players longer than 1-3 years anyways.

Compare their first three seasons as starters only. Pippen wins in almost every category and makes an all star team. Pippen even hit a 20 PER in season three and kept it around there for the majority of his career. And this was in the late 80s early 90s on a slower paced Bulls team in a totally different era. Remember defense in the 80s and 90s? Yeah. Defense. Another category where Pippen clearly beats Parsons.

And that's only comparing their first three years, not projecting what Scottie would do later on. Again, it was clear early on that he had the tools to be great.

Chandler could very well improve. But it would be a massive reach to assume that he'll get to that level. Dallas has already taken that bet.

Actually Ariza isn't declining, he has consistently been improving over the last three seasons.

Chandler Parsons will be very lucky if he is ever as good as Toni Kukoc was. Scottie Pippen is an absurd comparison.

No, we can resolve this now. Scottie Pippen was the best or second best perimeter defender in the NBA capable of guarding 4 spots on the floor. Chandler Parsons cannot even guard Nic Batum.

Scottie Pippen was a 10-time NBA all-defense player. Whatever Parsons does from now on, I will eat my shorts if he achieves that.

Naturally ballplayers tend to decline on the other side of 30.
Ariza is no different, unless you're projecting he will finish his career a la Kareem.
It is absurd to compare Parsons to Pippen, defensively.
I'm talking about style of play and what each can bring to a team overall offensively.
However Parsons defense should vastly improve, now that he has a competent coach in Carlisle.

You don't have to be able to create your own shot playing with Dirk. They're going to be a great pick-and-pop threat.

3 point shooting can be so random though, look at Harden's season, ebbs and flows. Ariza has a good release and much better arc now than he used to though but eh, who knows.

Parsons excels in transition, cutting to the rim, staying active around the basket, passing, and hitting the open corner 3. Creating his own shot is not one of them, great player, just saying though...

    See Ariza circa 2009.

52.7% of Parsons' 2 point baskets and 94.5% of his 3 point baskets were assisted. Parsons also averaged 4 assists per game and assisting on 17% of teammates' baskets while on the court.

While these are not the kind of numbers you see from the likes of James Harden and Kobe, they do suggest some ability to create shots for himself and teammates. And he may well have the ability to do more in the right situation.

One example to look to is Hedo Turkoglu-- another 6'9''-ish who is skilled but doesn't explode past you off the dribble. Turkoglu also mostly scored assisted baskets (with % of baskets being assisted similar to Parsons) during the early part of his career, but became relied upon to create his own shots and for others when he got to Orlando. In 2007-2009, less than 25% of his 2 point baskets came off assists. And Hedo also is a guy that Parsons watched growing up in Orlando.

Even Kevin Durant-- who is no doubt a superior talent to Parssons-- gradually expanded his game and created more for himself and teammates as his career went on. The point is, player can expand their game as they develop new skills and become used differently.

check out Parson's playoff AST number, he can only do it in regular season, non clutch time, with loose defense.

Ariza is slightly worse on offense but miles better on D. A lot cheaper as well.
