Parsons got paid and he deserved it. My point is, he is a quality wing player who's only 25 and can get better. Even if his game doesn't get better he could be traded.

All in all, the rockets are worst than before.

I don't think Morey would mind considering all the 2nd round picks he could get.

That contract isn't really tradeable, take Lin's contract and make it 3 times worse. You could trade it sure, if you packaged it with every asset under the sun but that thing was bad, really really bad.

No glue now. Nick Johnson got glue? Who got glue? No glue, we gonna fall apart!

This was, to me, the most shocking, disappointing free agency move I've ever seen the Rox make (or not make)-- and I've been a fan since they moved here from San Diego.

The only glue we can create would be from Harden becoming a leader by example on D. So I'm hoping for a miracle.

When's the last time a starter and fan favorite signed with another team by tweeting a picture with the opposing owner at a club? Just asking.

That big middle finger sticks in my craw. Not classy. Very self-centered and even vicious to your loyal fans.

    This.

Folks who are saying that Parsons' contract would be "easily" tradeable aren't thinking things through.

    1. Overpay. You're going to need to sweeten the deal simply because he's probably getting $3M more per year than his production value. Multiply that by 3 years for a $9M overpay. So you'll need to add sweetener just to offset the cash and cap hits.

    2. Player option. Since it's a player option, the receiving team can't plan their cap space well. At any time Parsons could opt out and head for greener pastures. And if he under performs you know that he's not going to opt out so you're locked in for the money. So sweeten the deal more.

    3. Trade kicker. If that great player comes along, you're going to pay a premium to move Parsons on top of his salary. Once again, another way that hinders your ability to protect your team if he becomes injured, under performs, or a much better player/fit becomes available. Add yet more sweetener to a trade.

    4. Length. 3 years IS a long time. People saying that it's a "short term" contract are fooling themselves. 4 years is the max for non-bird rights. 3 is STILL a long contract, especially since it has a player option at the max. It's basically 3 guaranteed years since the ONLY way that Parsons opts out is if the salary cap goes up and he wants more money. In other words, it's massive downside, limited upside. 1 or 2 years with opt outs is a short contract. 3 years with a player option at a high salary is NOT a short contract. Add even more sweetener for a trade.

In other words, the ONLY ways that Parsons contract is a decent deal for a team is if he's either the last piece you need for a contender (IE, puts you over the top) and you need to overpay anyway, or if he actually lives up to his $15M deal and at that point you're just paying market price with no insurance against injury or decline.

Any team that signs that contract is basically saying that they're locking in Parsons for good. There is NO way that you can consider that contract remotely tradeable. You can't even sell it as an expiring contract since in the 1st year he can just take the trade and opt in (stuck for 2 years) and in the 2nd year he can just opt out (walk before you can even trade him as an expiring to get assets back).

It's really a terrible, terrible contract... especially if you still need to get a 3rd star or have substantial need to build depth.

This is so dumb, why do people keep saying this? They were going to match Parsons if Bosh signed and pay as much tax as necessary to go to war with that team, because that team would have been worth it. A team without Bosh locked into Parsons' horrible contract with no flexibility would NOT have been worth it.

They will pay if it's worth it, they won't if it isn't. It's not that complicated, and it's not just about the money.

People need to separate their personal feelings for Parsons from their basketball reasoning for Parsons.

This makes me sad, because I really like Chandler and thought he had huge potential for us. I was posting before last season that he WAS the third star player we needed, already. He can cut to rim and make layups pretty much whenever he wants. His potential still is huge. He's got a lot of Durant characteristics, though not as good right now in any of them. However...

He was better two years ago than he was last year. His three-point shooting declined markedly, which is cancerous for a team that takes such an incredible amount of threes. My God, do we take an unbelievable amount of threes, often contested threes because of no ball-movement. I just can't see it as a championship-winning strategy. But I digress...

He still hasn't figured out (or hasn't had it figured out for him) what his role on the team is for any particular game. Now, he's quite adept at fulfilling multiple roles, but that's the problem. He'll put up a seemingly effortless 20 points in the first half slashing to basket (and he is very pretty to watch when he does that), but then he'll switch to outside shooting or assist-man in the second half and be much less effective. It's not because the other team switches their defense and shuts him down, either; he's probably one of the hardest on the team to guard. It's a character trait that you'd never believe could be bad: being too unselfish.

In my two years of watching him, I don't recall anything particularly special about his defense. Now I will admit that I am not very good at noticing the subtler points of defense, but I can notice the unsubtle ones, and he just sort of seemed to be...there, nothing game changing. If he's an awesome defender, and I can't see it, I fully retract this paragraph.

So, at this moment in time, that contract just seems too much, considering you're not 100% sure what's in the expensive package you'd be buying. However, that very, VERY likely could be our coaches not knowing how to get him to play at his highest level in a defined role. Maybe Rick Carlisle WILL be able to do that, and for Chandler's sake I hope it happens. For our sake, though, I hope it doesn't; we can barely beat the Mavs as it is.

No rallies this year, I suppose. Fine with me, since it extremely hot at the Dwight one last year. Maybe we should hold a vigil, though (at night, when it's cooler).

Dude was way better at scoring @ the rim in traffic than Harden. Parsons is a legit 6'9 with way above average handles and just needed the proper coaching. I think Parsons' defense dipped as well as Lin's due to having to compensate for Harden's lack of defense the past 2 years. Harden as a teammate will wear you out in that way.

So you're just entering every thread today and twisting them into an excuse to bash Harden?

    Good times.

I never understood the bad contract debate. I think that's just your way of coping with his departure. You're not writing the checks and you aren't affected in any way. Dirk took a pay cut and their combined salaries for the next three years is 25 million which is a bargain any way you look at it. Marion and dirk combined were making more the past few years.

Its a short term contract and why would mavs look to trade someone they wanted and probably want to keep even longer? I was personally against the acquisition, but the more I think about it the more I see him fitting in great with that team. I'm not too worried about the defense either. I think Carlisle will help in that regard too as mavs play a lot of zone and team defense.

Mavs solidified the 3 spot, which has never been their strong suit. Marion+Carter were great no doubt, but parsons (and Jefferson) is an upgrade. In fact mavs upgraded every position except PG this offseaon.

And then those saying dirk is pissed don't understand after this contract is over he would've made over 200mm in salary. He lives a simple life and I've never once heard him complain about money. In fact he's turned down max offers twice from the rockets. Also, with Chandler and Wright expiring next year the Mavs have enough space for another max contract.

Bottom line, yes parsons is overpaid, but Morey should've matched, especially when considering he said he would match ANY offer! He obviously wanted to keep him contrary to what BS he's saying now.

Not matching was the right move, but not keeping him at under a million for another year was a huge mistake.

I think the Rockets just way underestimated the market and who would be willing to give out a bad contract. The plan worked with Scola and Lowry to get both at or below market value, and backfired big time with Parsons. But you can't compound the first mistake by overpaying Parsons, so it is what it is.

I think Dallas kind of screwed themselves with the move unless Parsons becomes an all star every year of that contract. Likewise I think the Heat set themselves up to be 4-8 seeds in the east for the duration of Bosh's time with them. Good enough to make the playoffs, almost no chance of making it past the 2nd round without significant moves. If you can't win with Lebron, Bosh and Wade, who can you possibly get to replace Lebron that would give you a chance when Bosh and Wade will likely be taking up most of your cap space?

Two bad decisions by other teams that lead to a terrible offseason so far for the Rockets. That being said we are roughly where we were last year, and going into last year most fans thought we were contenders after getting Dwight. Our young players can improve and there will be additional moves. Certainly it's hard not to be disappointed until we see what those moves are though.

He was offered a max deal, hard sold on being a franchise player and earning a bigger role. Morey alluded to Parsons as not being good enough to be our 3rd best player. That's the difference.

It wasn't a middle finger at us at all. It was a middle finger to Rockets' management. He's a millenial - millenials traditionally do not have loyalty when it comes to employers. They're looking for the best deal for them. They have a sense of entitlement when it comes to their talent and earning potential, they want to go where they have the best chance to earn and showcase their abilities.

I'm all for that. No reason to bendover for Houston, the team telling you you're not good enough, just because they're the team that drafted you.

Don't take it so personally. It's not about us. It's about them. Parsons just told Morey and Co. to ****off. And it wouldn't be the first time a Rockets player left unhappy.

    I agree.

For Morey, it was all about the loss of flexibility.

For us fans, it was the contract plus the "in-your-face"-ness of that photo. Never expected that from Parsons. But still he's been "kissing asses" since Jeremy came over, always wanting to be the center of attention.

He became Jeremy Lin's best friend. Then he publicly announced he was the one who recruited Howard. Now he's friends with Dirk also. Ha, good luck on being the "franchise guy."

Way better at finishing? Way above average handles? In relation to what? Granted, I get that you like to Harden bash but those are pretty bold statements. Any proof to back it up? I don't recall thinking to myself in the past two years, "Man, I wish they'd let Parsons take it to the rack more often, he can handle it and finish better than anyone on the team".

    Donnie Nelson:

    Happy Day in Maverickville.

We had to sweat it out until midnight New York time last night. We couldn't be more fired up.

Why is he such a good fit?

Truly an old school type of small forward that can also play power forward at 6'10. He passes, shoots long ball, great teammate, leadership in the locker room, underrated passer, underrated to get in the paint and find people and again at 6'10, gives you a nice front line (with Dirk and Tyson).

This was the guy you guys targeted? Bulls-eye on him?

Nice to get the visits and considerations from LeBron and Carmelo but we knew those were long shots. This is the one we really, really wanted. You have to put yourself out there, because you run the risk of other free agents coming off the board. As names come off the board, you get nervous. Your B plan turns into C.

How much were you sweating yesterday?

We wouldn't have been completely iced out. Not like we didn't haven't contingencies but this was our A plan. It panned out. We took the risk and it worked. Chandler is such a great locker room teammate and he'll fit in with our chemistry and gives us another 3-pt shooter and makes life easier for our back court. We can't wait til October.

Talk about Felton and how you see him fitting in with the direction you guys are taking.

Excited about Felton. Made some mistakes last year; tough year for him, he'll be the first to admit that. He's looking to turn the page and start fresh. A nice compliment to Devin. We're excited about him. We've had success with guys having down years and then having a springboard year. We're hoping that's the case (here).

You look at Chandler Parsons' numbers last year, a very versatile player, 25 years old. How much room to grow?

We'll find out. That was a huge part of this, the age factor. He's a young player who is established in the league. It was a perfect storm for us. Not only a high quality player here and now but is 25 and will get better. At 6'10, he's a small forward but can slide over. That gives you all kinds of versatility. Perfect fit in the locker room. Then Tyson in the back pocket to block shots in case the quicker guys get around him, that makes the whole thing go.

Did you guys overpay to get him?

Based on the craziness of the market, there are some real head scratchers. In our opinion, no. No way Chandler will turn from the guy he is now to all the sudden can't function on the court. The payment schedule is based on them not being able to match. If we did overpay a little, that was the spirit of it. We got the player we wanted.

Morey called it an untradeable structured contract. Is this untradeable?

We're not looking to move Chandler Parsons. Flat out, we want him to be here a long, long time. Tradeability, we've had some interesting contracts in the past and got off them. No such thing as an untradeable contract. We're excited and not looking to trade him at all.

$2.7 cap exception. Looking for a 6th man-type--Mo Williams? How are things going in terms of Mo Williams or another option off the bench?

Jefferson, to get him at the price we did, it really was a nice get. We're looking for another stretch guy to step in. Vince was such a great player for us and human being and we wish him nothing but the best. Incredible player but also incredible human being. We do still have the $2.7 and are still figuring out what to do with that.

Why a 3-year deal instead of 4 for Parsons?

There are, as you know, we are not only in the here and now but also have eyes on the future of the team. When players become available, we're looking at different years when there are good opportunities for folks that will become free agents. There is a method to the madness I can't get into on air.

Dirk, Monta and now Chandler plus max space next summer, how much more attractive are the Mavs when you go out next summer?

We experienced it this past summer. To be on the short list for Carmelo and LeBron is telltale. Hopefully we'll be able to reel one of them in next time.
