See I can't figure this out; if his contract runs out July 31, why not wait to sign him then.

Or does that mean the Knicks would still retain his rights afterwards???

But the Knicks are sour and bitter over VG, no doubt.

I can't really blame them. If VG turns into Larry Brown ditching teams every few years, then he's finished. I only hope he stays.

So if compensation is a must, I think cash is a definite. Cash should only be the offer, but of course it will be a picl. Might as well give up this years second rounder. If that doesn't work, trade Tito!!!

Well, from what I hear (news wise and from people here), Glen Rice isn't worth anything, and certainly helped solidify the non-playoff appearance this past season.

So he might be gone early next season (traded by VG) or might be gone now. Might as well send him back up to NY!!!

I don't know about this compensation thing, but I heard some ideas about paying them back. One of them was having Yao and the Rockets play 2 exibition games in MSG.

edit: Nevermind. I just read the new article that I think Lancet posted. I think it just said a future 2nd round pick.

Found the following article just now. Here's the link:

    http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/6051562.htm

    Some excerpts:

"Knicks, who own Van Gundy's rights through July 31, asked for five home exhibition games starting in 2004."

"Van Gundy is said to be miffed at the Knicks' request, especially since he has less than 60 days remaining on his contract with them."

"Yao and Francis is why he took this job," said a person close to Van Gundy. "Who wouldn't want to coach those two guys?"

Name one active coach who takes all of June and July off? Are you saying we should go without a coach for June and July for the value of a 2nd round pick?

Some things coaches do in June and July:

    1. prepare for the draft (trades do happen, even without picks)
    2. coach Griff and Nachbar in Summer League (early July)
    3. thoroughly scout and prepare for SnTs and FA season, which starts July 15th.

Those who think we should wait 'till August 1st to have a coach on our team for the sole purpose of saving a 2nd rounder are going to having to explain to the rest of us why we are losing out on the early trades/FAs and are having a pointless Summer League.

    snap out of it.

A coach on board *now* is much more important than a 2nd rounder. For instance, with no coach, Posey might get offers that only last 'till Aug 1st, as a way to make him take it or leave it before we even have a coach on board to counter it.

imso, the new coach should be a major part of *all* transactions this summer and all Summer League training, and it would suck if we don't have a coach until Aug 1st.

I hope it's a future second. We don't have a pick, so our 2nd rounder is slightly more valuable this season. Also, the 2nd round looks great this year.

If it meant having JVG here two months earlier though, I guess we should cough it up.

Getting him acquainted with the team is priceless.

I agree with heypartner. I still think NY is being stupid for demanding compensation for these 6 weeks, though.

The Knicks are just being anal about it because JVG did the right thing at that time by walking out of that overpaid underachieving lack of ambition team. Aside from the 2 exhibition games which would be a good chance for the team to get a good runout, that 2nd rounder is worth a thought. Assuming Maddox and Collier are out, what if Boki, TMo and Hawkins go down(touch wood)? Rice, Cato and EG simply isn't enough cover, and that's where the drafted kid might play a role.. So giving up this 2nd rounder isn't as simple as some guys might think..

Give them Moochie. Then when VG comes, he can concentrate on finding a real backup guard. :p

The Knicks know Houston wants to finalize the Van Gundy situation, so NY has the leverage. If you're the Knicks, why not try to squeeze whatever you can out of Houston?

Give them a 2nd round pick. Given our recent draft history, we would probably just blow it anyway. :p

The ROX gave the Knicks a future 2nd round pick in the year of the Rox's choice as compensation for the release of Van Gundy.

This is what I hoped they do. And I hope we have about 7 years to hand it over at our choice. It's worth it, but the Knicks could have shown some class and not asked. Oh well, it speeds up our process.
