No, it's not a joke. There is a state law that says an employee of the gas station must pump it for you.

there are a few states that are like this... some up in the north east as well... I think it has something to do with unions.

New Jersey has the same law...all gas stations are full service. Part of the plan to keep employment levels up.

I like the idea. Maybe TX needs that. With as many people that get gas per day in Houston, employment rates should be higher then ever!

I saw a candid camera once, where they were in Oregon. They were at a gas station telling people that they had a self-service pump for like 50 cents cheaper right around the corner. Half the people said it was illegal, and half the people(mostly grown men) said they didn't know how to pump gas!!!:D

Yes, that is what it is.

Oregon is an extremely socialist leaning state.

They tax the heck out of your income after the government does. They do cover most medical for people in the state, and they have tons of laws like this to help out with unemployment, BUT gas stations charge like $0.20 more a gallon to cover the costs.

Oregon attracts a lot of of degenerates because of their many welfare style plans. Especially on the coast.

Sorry, Sm34. I lived in Oregon for five years, and I disagree almost categorically.

    1) Oregon is completely bipolar politically. Yes, there are lefties in Portland and Eugene, but the rest of the state is filled with the most rabid conservatism I've ever scene. The Oregon Citizens Alliance tried to pass several anti-gay measures during the 1990s, basically attempting to make it law that any employer or store owner could legally discriminate against gays in hiring and patronage. The populace also passed a legal-bear-and-cougar-baiting law while I was there. Bizarre.

    2) Their taxes have been frozen for a while, and their taxes are much lower than California's. That's one reason why their higher education system is literally on the edge of collapse. The voters always oppose tax increases there.

    3) I was always surprised how relatively cheap gas was there. It's cheaper than in California or even Washington state.

    4) You are totally correct about all the degenerates in Oregon however! :D

Yep, I remember one time when I drove through Oregon, I was trying to look for a self-serv gas station. After a while, I figured there had to be something in the law that prohibited it. Sure enough, when we finally gave up and pulled into a full-serv station, they told me it's illegal to have self-serv pumps.

How about prohibiting people from cooking their own meals to boost the restaurant industry? Or outlawing long-distant road trips to help out the airline industry?

Full-service is nice in REALLY COLD weather, but I always feel guilty not pumping my own gas. Like I'm lazy or something.

Shoot, with all the gas-guzzling SUVs in Houston, employment rates would skyrocket if full-service was mandated here.

...or giving multi-billion dollar corporations giant tax cuts they don't need, or "easing" pollution laws on refineries, or making it illegal to sue a manufacturer for faulty products, or building roads and sewage to attract a business that you won't tax, or handing out $15 billion bailout packages, or "awarding" billions in subsidized government contracts...to boost the economy.

It amazes me that people don't realize we live in a socialist country without the benefits of socialism.

That is one of the reasons I like driving through Oregon. On a long trip, it's a bit of a bore to pump my own gas. Very convenient...

I thought it was strange when I tried to pump my gas a guy was already standing there. Still, if its providing jobs, I dont mind one bit. After awhile I enjoyed having them pump my gas.

As for Oregon, its one of the few states I would actually want to live in. Portland has got to be the cleanest city I have ever been in, and the coast area is just beautiful.

Dont forget Oregon also offers 5 cents per aluminum can if you recylcle. . . . . I think that should take care of gas money alone

Oregon is indeed very nice country. I thought perhaps they were just trying to stop people from topping off.
