Just heard that Mario Elie and some NY basketball beat writer will be on 610 sometime during the 5 pm hour.
he also said he wants to be an asst. here and he loves houston. Texas has been very nice to him. I know he doesnt want to leave his wife she is a local newscaster here. He said van gundy is gonna bring us back to the top.
He also doesn't want to leave his recently born triplets. Congrats to he and wife, channel 13's Gina Gaston.
i wouldn't mind Mario Elie. He would definitely be respected and would relate to the players. Plus winning 2 championships with the rockets help too. If the rockets are lucky they'll get one former rocket as an assistant
Dude bring his ass on!! I loved Elie in the heyday of 94-95. Gutsy balls to the wall dude who was a competitior in every sense of the word. His passion and fire for the game would be a big plus for this team. Somebody get Van Gundy on the horn.
According to the guys on 610 there will only be one opening available since all of his old assistants will be joining Van Gundy. That position will be Ewings if he wants it. Van Gundy loves Ewing and wants him here.
Please clarify - do you mean all of Van Gundy's old assistants or all of Rudy T's old assistants (minus the guy who went to Golden State)?
I would love to have Mario Elie as an assistant coach! Proven winner and tough attitude. Ewing, on the other hand...should just go back to the Gold Club and stay away from the Rockets!!!
I think he means all of his assistances minus Don Chaney. Don Chaney was one of his ast coaches, and then became head Coach. The opening would be because Chaney is most likely going to stay in NY.
I would add Mario Elie to the Rockets' coaching staff in a heartbeat. During the 94-95 season, this guy hit so many clutch shots, and led this team on and off the court in so many ways. He's always been a good role model, and he seems like an intelligent guy. I'd love to see him as an assistant coach.
There are three interesting candidates... Elie, Terry Porter, and Avery Johnson. Porter and Johnson are seen as potential head coaches though...
Who were his other assistants, then? Qualifications? Is he essentially going to be pulling them from Chaney's staff right now.
The one thing that I DONT want about all of this is his old Assistant Coaches from New York, or our old Assistants. I do like Mario! How on earth would anyone know about this as JVG only made his mind up this morning!
Along with Don Chaney (now the Knicks head coach) here are JVG's assistant coaches when he coached the Knicks: Steve Clifford (College - Maine '83) Tom Thibodeau (College - Salem State '81) Andy Greer (College - SUNY Brockport '85)
