No other guard is in more than three categories. The only other player in the west that is as versital and as complete as Steve is Micheal Finley who has been playing small forward all year. These numbers do not lie! If Steve Francis is not in the all-star game then their is no justice in the NBA. Can anyone identify the guard that is not on any of these lists? Hint....he currently has more votes than Steve Francis. Notice which player is 4th in scoring among western guards....think he deserves consideration for an all star selection? ------------------ [This message has been edited by crash5179 (edited January 05, 2001).]
Where is Stephon Marbury? Something must not be right, because I thought he was averaging like 25 points per game this season. ------------------ "Of course, everything looks bad if you remember it!" Homer Simpson
Jason Williams is who he is talking about. He started the season off good, but has started to fizzle in recent weeks. Let's get the voting going guys! ------------------ President of the Moochie Norris Fan Club - est. 99-00
Steve would need to make it as a SG. The two best points are Payton and Kidd. If Steve wants consideration for PG, he needs to get more assists, play some D and learn how to run the break better. ------------------
I'm certainly a Rockets fan. But ...... if I were to vote for the best guards in the West, my pick would have been Kobe Bryant, Gary Payton, and Jason Kidd. No question!!! BUT the AllStar voting is all about popularity. That's why we the Rockets fans vote for Stevie. And it's also the reason why Jason Williams has more votes than Stevie right now. Consider the population of California!!! Anyway, I think this topic has been discussed in another thread ... ------------------
Its not that hard to average 9 assists when you never shoot and only pass. Im not sure how many of you have watched stockton extensively this year, but he is NOT an all star caliber player. I'd rank Nick Van Exel and Steve Nash both ahead of Stockton. By the way Steve is WITHOUT A DOUBT a top 5 guard in the west and there shouldnt even be an argument here. He is the ONLY player to lead his team in points assists and rebounds. Popularity has alot to do with the all star voting but in Steve's case there's a lot of substance to back up the flash all fans see, unlike Williams. The top 5 guards in the west are as follows 1- Kobe Bryant 2- Gary Payton 3- Jason Kidd 4- Steve Francis 5- Michael Finley ....as someone posted earlier mike has been playing the 3 all year long but he's on the ballot as a 3 so what are you going to do. For anyone who thinks Finley is more deserving than Francis just say so and Ill quickly show you why he's not ------------------
Hey that guy thats just ahead of Francis in steals is pretty good also ------------------ President of the Steve Francis, Jamal Crawford,Larry Hughes, and Charles Woodson fan club.
tacoma, francis ahead of finley? In a couple years? yes, right now? no. As of now, Finley is a better player than Francis, just look at how good the Mavs are doing this year. Him and Nowitzki are carrying that team big time. We did beat them twice though....
I dont know how much of the mavs games you have watched but I have watched alot and the reason that team is doing well has nothing to do with Finley. It's all about Nash and Dirk in Big D. To tell you the truth, Finley is having a subpar season by his standards ------------------
Also Finley isnt as near important or as complete a player as Steve.Steve is a better rebounder, passer and scorer even though Finley has a higher scoring average I think. Finley's game is a predominantly post up style with him occasionally facing the basket to take it to the hole or shoot a long jumper. He can not take people off the dribble effectively ------------------
The Mavs wish Finley would take it to the hole more. There are a lot of complaints about Finley settling for the jump shot. The Mavs feel that he has the quickness to get to the basket and get a lot more free throws. Finley is having a subpar year compared to last year but he is a complete player. He rebounds, scores and plays good D. I know he will not be voted into the all star game as a guard and since he has not been playing the two this year I am hoping the coaches will select him as a three if they select him at all. ------------------
Finley is much better than dirk or Nash is. IMO, this season finley deserves an all star spot more than Steve, but since there is 5 guard slots(you can have that many anyway), you can have kobe and paytno/kidd starting with steve, payton/kidd, and finley coming off the bench. ------------------ President of the Charles Barkley fan club...Oh he retired? When?
Lil Francis, that guy just ahead of Stevie in steals is taking 17 shots a game to get 18 points, shooting under 39%, and not even averaging 1.5 assists per turnover. ------------------
There are more than three guards on the all star team. If Steve does not make it then who else (besides Payton, Kidd and Kobe) do you think should be there? Certainly not JWill. Only the starters are selected by the fans so there is not a good reason that I can think of to omit Steve. ------------------
The Pasty Gangster, Alfalfa, Noooo! Whatever you want to call the man, J. Stockton is averaging 9 assists a game and is gonna go to the all-star game. (not that I'd vote for him) So the question is does the West go to 5 guards? If so, Steve's got a good chance (tho NVE stands a chance as well). ------------------ "Thirty-seven?" -Randall, Clerks www.clutchtown.com
crash, I thought you were talking about starters ... Anyway, Stevie is playing enough exciting basketball to be selected an AllStar, but sadly the coaches don't only go by numbers. They can make very stupid decisions, like selecting Chris Gatling to the AllStar game ... ------------------
when you consider that Steve probably outscores stockton by 6-8 points per game, the difference of three assists isn't a big deal. ------------------
When you consider that Steve is dominating little thug Stockton in every catagory except assists then the 3 assists is even less of a big deal. ------------------
