Neither D-Rob nor TD will end up as great as Hakeem, let alone superceding him. Dream is a freak of nature physically, mentally and skillwise. D-Rob is a wuss. TD is just a nice combo of size, strength and speed with none being outstanding while having all around skills minus FT shooting. Dream's shotblocking defense was so great that even in his waning days some penetrating guards still got scared into losing their ball just knowing Hakeem jumped up to block them, Dream could play defense by his mere presence as he was the defensive god in the NBA. On offense Dream is known for dreamshakes, what do D-Rob and TD have to offer? Mermaid dance and FT choking? LOL. Dream redefined the center position and neither D-Rob nor TD will accomplish that. Dream had QUADRUPLE DOUBLES, now where's yours Timmy and Dave?
not that i'm not firmly on the hakeem kicks robinson's ass side of this argument, but dave does have a quadruple double.
Can somebody lock this thread? the only place in the Universe where Robinson v. Olajuwon is still considered a debatable proposition is among delusional spurs fans fantasizing among themselves on their own message boards and/or trolling here. We, and everybody else who has ever seen a basketball game, all know what the answer is.
But Hakeem had 2 of them (ok, the records show only 1, but he had one against GS that same season but the official scorers took away an assist after the game).
The good news: http://www.chron.com/content/archiv...t=&type=&user=houston&sview=1&hview=2&dview=1 Akeem's quad double lifts Rockets By EDDIE SEFKO Staff Akeem Olajuwon was deflecting the good-humored needling from his teammates after his monstrous game against Golden State when Rockets trainer Ray Melchiorre walked by with a perfect commentary. "It's a good thing for Gretzky you can't skate," Melchiorre said. And it's a good thing for Mike Scott that Akeem doesn't swing a bat. And if Joe Montana had to face Olajuwon , he would be sacked for a loss. Just like the Warriors were Saturday night. Olajuwon had what league historians believed to be only the third quadruple -double in NBA history to power the Rockets over Golden State 129-109 at The Summit. So many times, opponents feel like they are getting Olajuwon in stereo. Saturday night, the Warriors got him in quadraphonic. From every angle on the court, Olajuwon was blasting on the Warriors with a relentless concert of athletic talent. The numbers: 29 points, 18 rebounds, 11 blocked shots and a career-high 10 assists. His five steals were almost lost in the shuffle. The only quad-doubles Rocket history experts could unearth were accomplished by Chicago's Nate Thurmond in 1974 and San Antonio's Alvin Robertson in 1986. Never mind that Rockets officials had to go back over the game film after the buzzer to find the 10th assist. It was, nonetheless, as dominating a game as anybody has played in the NBA this season. "I don't know if it's possible to play a more complete game than he did tonight," Coach Don Chaney said of Olajuwon . "I was very proud to see him get the four doubles. If anybody deserves it, it's him. He plays so hard every night.' For Olajuwon , it was another night's work. He tends to downplay his heroics, but this game dwarfed his normal achievements. "It's a big accomplishment," he said. "I'm glad I'm part of history.' Asked if, after years of being called a poor passer, he ever thought he'd get 10 assists in a game, he said, "Now that I know the feeling, I'll be dishing it more often.' On this night, nobody would argue with Olajuwon if he wanted to start shooting half-court shots. The most important byproduct of Olajuwon 's effort was what it did to the Rockets' standing in the playoff race. With the win, the Rockets improved to 26-31. They trailed Seattle by 3 1/2 games with the Sonics playing late Saturday in Portland. The Rockets now own ninth place in the Western Conference, leading Golden State by one game. Olajuwon , who ignited the Rockets on a 22-2 run in the second quarter that opened up the game in their favor, has been playing sparklingly over the past few weeks. Not that he was the lone Warrior-basher Saturday. He got strong supporting efforts from Sleepy Floyd (21 points, 11 assists) and the other three starters, each of whom scored at least 15 points. "I'm more pleased with that than anything," Chaney said. "Akeem did all those things, but he did them in the flow of the game.' In other words, he wasn't a one-man team. The Rockets piled up the points in the second quarter, when they outscored the Warriors 34-13 to take a 60-45 halftime lead. Vernon Maxwell, who continues to excel at sparking the Rockets off the bench, had eight points and two assists in the second quarter. Olajuwon had eight points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals. The Rockets' rally started with them down 36-26. They reeled off eight points. After Mitch Richmond scored for the Warriors, the Rockets poured in 14 uninterrupted points to go up 48-38. The lead hit 88-65 in the third quarter. Not surprisingly, the second half turned into showtime for Olajuwon . He was everywhere the Warriors turned. "It wasn't fair," said Tom Tolbert, Golden State 's forward who wrestled with Olajuwon much of the night. "It was like he was in my hip pocket.' Olajuwon blocked three of Tolbert's shots. Tolbert finished the night 1-for-11 and was as frustrated as any Warrior. As incredible as Olajuwon 's game was, Chaney said he's of the opinion that the 6-foot-10 center is capable of even more outrageous feats. "Personally, I think the sky is the limit for Akeem in terms of his development," Chaney said. "A lot of people don't like it when I say that. They think he's at the peak of his career. "But he's still growing. I think eventually, he'll break a lot of records in this league. He'll surpass Wilt Chamberlain by a lot.' The categories are still to be determined. But Olajuwon made a clear statement Saturday night that he is capable of doing anything and everything on a basketball court. "You can't do much more than that," said Floyd. "It was amazing.' No, it was just Akeem. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The bad news: http://www.chron.com/content/archiv...t=&type=&user=houston&sview=1&hview=2&dview=1 Akeem's quad-double disallowed by league By EDDIE SEFKO Staff SAN ANTONIO - As far as the NBA is concerned, Akeem Olajuwon 's remarkable quadruple -double was indeed a great individual performance. What it wasn't, however, was a quadrupledouble. After dissecting film from Saturday's game between the Rockets and Golden State , league officials disallowed the rare quad-double with which Olajuwon had been credited. Rod Thorn, the NBA's vice president for operations, said Monday the league could not locate a 10th assist for Olajuwon , who had 29 points, 18 rebounds and 11 blocked shots against the Warriors. The Rockets originally credited Olajuwon with nine assists. But Coach Don Chaney and media-relations director Jay Goldberg viewed the game film immediately after the buzzer and thought they had found an assist that was not credited to Olajuwon . A revised statistical summary was issued, awarding Olajuwon the quad-double . The league not only nullified the quad-double , which would have been only the third in NBA history, but they sent a message to the Rockets and other teams that amended statistics from games will not be allowed. "A box score should not be changed after the fact for the purpose of achieving a statistical milestone," Thorn said. "If an appreciable statistical change needs to be made after the box score is distributed, the league office is responsible for making the change if it is deemed necessary.' Thorn added the action was "not intended to diminish in any way what was obviously a tremendous performance by one of the NBA's great players.' Olajuwon , who said after the game he thought he had achieved "a big accomplishment" said he didn't think the league's reversal was a slap at him or the Rockets. He said he thought his feat was legitimate. "There were 10 assists," he said. "They just said you can't change the number after the game. "It bothers me a little, but what can you do?' In this case, nothing. Especially because the NBA went to great lengths to overrule on the accomplishment. After reviewing the game film, the league called Goldberg and had a teleconference to clarify the ruling. "As far as we're concerned, he did it," Rockets General Manager Steve Patterson said. Said Goldberg: "I agree with Steve. I stand by it being 10 assists.' But Olajuwon will not join Nate Thurmond and Alvin Robertson in the NBA archives as the only people to get a quad-double .
Spurs suck and couldn't touch Houston in our two championship years. The coach sucked cause he didn't use the team right like Jordan's coach used Rodman the way he was supposed to be used/handled. Compare Robinson to a player of his equal stature like the sloppy second placers such as Scottie Quitten, Joe Dumbarse, and all the Laker punks who rarely touch the ball beside Kobe Hog and Shaq Mefirstyoukneel. What stat does Robinson have Olajuwan doesn't own? Most years missed to playing basketball due to commitments and excuses. I hate all the teams out there. They suck. They are the enemy. I have anger management issues when someone campares crap to gold.
Wasnt david robinsons quadruple-double with 10 turnovers and not 10 assists? Can somebody please verify this.
vs. Detroit 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 blocked shots Drexler almost had a quadruple double too when he played for us. vs. Kings 25 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 10 steals
man reading that article was strange. maxwell was coming off the bench, richmond was playing for the warriors, and tom tolbert was playing instead of announcing (and being abused). don chaney was quite prophetic in saying that hakeem had not hit his peak yet and would be one of the all-time greats. also, i knew he got gipped out of another quad. but does hakeem gripe? nope, he just goes ahead and gets another one so that he does get in the record books. anyone remember if hakeem got his 10th assist in the official quid-double on a long shot from OT at the top of the key? for some reason, that's like the only thing i remember from that game, OT taking a 20 footer at the top of the key and i don't even know if it went in or not. man was that painfully close. he had the 9 assists with several minutes left and all we were trying to do was get him that assist. i think at least 4 people bricked a shot off a clyde pass in the closing minutes. of course some of his "rebounds" seemed to be a little questionable that game, but dammit we could've had 2 quad-dub guys.
D-ROB is great person, but anyone who thinks he was good a player as dream is nuts! First of all, Dream is the reason we won those two championships, and I don't expect a spurs fan to get that... since we had to kick their ass in the process of getting our second ring. Second, Tim Duncan is the only reason D-ROB got his first ring, and the only reason he may get a second. Third, D-ROB didn't develope a "go to" play b/c he was horribly scared and often got teary eyed when thinking of the humiliation suffered in the western conference finals of 95. From that point forward, he felt more comfortable from 15-20 feet out, where he couldn't be rejected by Dream.
I love when he calls Otis Thorpe an Allstar...... he was a rebounding machine and that is it......... OT always played hard, but he was barely an above average power forward........ David Robinson was a great player. But he will always be known as soft. That will never change from fans across the NBA. Duncan came along and took the strain off of him, that he couldn't carry. Hakeem could CARRY a team and did. I was kind of hoping the spurs might win, but now go NETS... bford
The Dream was the greatest athlete to ever grace the city of Houston. I believe he retired too early, that if he really wanted to, he could comeback and still put up 14 ppg and 8 reb per game. Come back DREAM! Get Healthy! Play power forward (he could at least kill Karl Malone!) alongside Yao!
If he didn't get injureded ala Karl Malone then he could've probably be the 2nd best center in the NBA
Guys I posted this in that spurs group after reading a rather ignorant arguement for DROB. So the quotes are'nt mine. Mike Ok here it comes from an admitted rockets fan. Ok, you're right, but its also impossible to say what Hakeem had done if he would have played basketball growing up. You won't hear a Rockets fan bring up the fact that Hakeem didn't pick up a basketball until he was 16 years old. In fact he played on the Nigerian national team only 1 1/2 years later, and I wouldn't bring it up except to demonstrate that WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THEY ENTERED THE NBA DOESN'T MATTER. ok enough said---- Now as for the Sean Elliot trade that was muffed.... HE FAILED his PHYSICAL. That's why we backed out of the trade. Houston definitely felt like he was a better player, but was unwilling to make a trade for someone who couldn't pass the team physical. Horry no doubt played a key ROLE in some title winning teams, so did steve kerr and john paxon, does that mean they were great players too? Not sure quite what this is referring to but I'll try to respond.... CAREER PLAYOFF AVERAGES PTS REBS BLOCKS STEALS Hakeem 25.9 11.20 3.26 1.69 David 21.1 10.70 2.58 1.23 Blame Hakeem for what??? Ok on a team with Charles Barkely and Clyde Drexler he takes all the blame?? Hmm... could it be that there were three washed up top 50 guys trying to for one last time. 97-98 98-99 99-00 Barkley played in 53 68 42 Drexler played in 70 RETIRED---- Hakeem played in 47 50 44 that tells me that they were all on the tail end of their career's You're absolutely right, but I fail to see how this was an advantage for Hakeem. Seems to me that if Hakeem had played with someone who had 17-18 boards a game he wouldn't have complained about it. First of all, he wasn't there the first championship, he was ONCE one of Jordan's closest rivals but by that stage of his career, he was only 3 years away from retirement. He was still a quality addition to the Rockets and certainly the best player Hakeem ever had. Now that those points are out of the way.... here's how I see it. David Robinson was a GREAT Player. He was among the best players of his era. Nobody can take that from him and I don't believe anybody is trying to. Hakeem is a GREAT player too. What I don't understand is why it makes Spurs fans upset to hear how great Hakeem was. They were definitely different players in different situations. I'm sure that you have seen the stats over their career and those are PER game stats and Hakeem has the edge. Hakeem was in my opinion a better player, for a longer period of time. 13 straight years of 21 pts 10 rebs 1.5 steals a game and 2.75 blocks a game (if it weren't for 1 year in that span it would be 3.5 steals is in my opinion the definition of consistency. Robinson certainly had the potential to be one of the all time greats, but unfortunately a bad back ruined a wonderful career. In addition he chose (admirably) to serve his country for four years. While he should not be penalized for that that it certainly happened. I hope the spurs fans don't dump on me for being a "homer" but I don't see how you can compare someone like Robinson and suggest that even though his career numbers weren't better than Hakeem's, nor did he do it for as long, but he is better than Hakeem. Again David certainly was a great player, but IMHO not as great as the DREAM. RocketMike
Is that what you do when you have nothing to talk about? David vs. Akeem? Who Cares? David lost to Akeem. There.. this thread is settled. Where is Akeem? Is he still alive? Wilt Chamberlain was better than Akeem, so was Jabbar, and if you count rings.. Luc Longley was just as good... Big deal...
