We just can't beat it. VG can save his bucks on the REAL lottery cuz he can play the NBA lottery every single year if he picks the Wiz's job. Isn't that fun? Imagine how fun it is when NBA broadcasts you playing lottery at a gas station.
My feeling is that Van Gundy will never seriously contemplate the Wizards job. He can not stand losing. So much so, that he jumped ship as soon as they started to go down. With the current situation in Washington, you are looking at three years to field a strong team, and that's baseline. With Houston, you have strong pieces and some leverage to get exactly what you want. That is why I believe Gumby is using Washington as salary leverage. Plus remember that he is already the second choice and that is an ego check. He is just trying to make Houston show him some love. two cents
I find it really ironic that when athletes and coaches are rightfully held accountable for their behavior and so many complain about how spoiled they are and how they don't see the bigger picture, so many of us are sitting in judgement of Van Gundy. He has made it clear that he is trying to do what is absolutely best for his wife and his daughter. He and his wife and both of their families are from the northeast. His daughter has grown up there. How is it that no one can seem to get that moving your family halfway across the country and away from all the things and people they've known is not an easy thing to do no matter how much you are getting paid? I mean, this guy is admirably doing what he thinks is best for his family by discussing it with them, talking about it with friends and peers and taking his time and all he gets from us is, "Damn, why is it taking you so long?" This guy is picking up his whole family and setting up a home and a new life in a brand new city and history tells all of us that he is more likely to be fired or step down from this job well before he retires. Most coaches last fewer than five years on the job. For all he knows, he could uproot his family, move here and then find out he's out of work in four years when he'll have to do it all over again. What he is doing is the right thing and he should be praised for it. Whether he chooses Houston or not, being deliberate about a decision this important is laudible despite our obvious impatience.
Right on, Jeff. My take on this has become, If the families of both JVG and his wife are from the NE, maybe they wanted a chance to talk to them first before saying "yes to Les"? Not so much for an opinion, but because they didn't want their families to hear it first on the news. Then they call the agent who calls Les...
