You see, this makes so much sense except for 1 thing.

They publicly said they were no longer going to conduct any more interviews.

Now, if they don't get Van Gundy and continue the search, Dunleavy will be so pissed that he would accept the Atlanta job. Even beggars have pride - occasionally.

So let's say the Rockets do interview Carlisle and it doesn't work out or he prefers Portland or whatever. Then what?

So basically if Van Gundy says no, we will have to offer our 3rd candidate the same money as our first 2 candidates because we've already boxed ourselves in.

This is what happens when you have no clue what you're doing and make mistake after mistake.

You lose the ability to continue interviewing and consequently lose all negotiating leverage.

If Van Gundy says no, I guarantee you Dunleavy will get a 5 year contract for $20 million.

The thing is Rox had all the negotiating power but didn't use it well at all.

If I were Les, I would tell JVG: "I am making a public announcement that you have till midnight today to accept my offer. If I don't get your signature by then, the offer is dead. I have told the agent of Dunlevvey to come on Sunday if that happens."

If JVG turns down the offer, is it the best interest to Rox to end the talk? No if JVG is better fit that Dunlevvy. But if you make a public commitment that you will end the talk, you leave JVG no room to push you. It will all up to JVG. Do you think he wants to screw you and himself all together? I bet he is not seriously thinking about going to Washington.

Dude. Gladder than hell you're not negotiating for us. The Brown scenario was one thing, but there's nobody to be pissed at here and there's no reason to get crazy with Van Gundy. If you were deciding where your family was going to live for up to five years and deciding between very different contracts, wouldn't you take a couple days to talk it over with your wife and agent? The offer was made no more than two or three days ago. Take a valium and a bubble bath and relax.

Whew. That's a relief. Thanks for the news. Clutch, can you put this on the front page? Smells like a headline to me.

The last time a prominant free agent left the town where he was being courted for home to talk to his family, he was talked out of leaving and into staying at/close to home.

Who do I speak of? Tim Duncan. Ready to sign with the Magic, he went home to San Antonio and consulted with his family and extended family (David Robinson, for one) and eventually decided to stay in San Antonio.

Leaving without having JVG's signature on a contract is not good news.

I hear what your saying, and just being back in familiar surroundings could be enough to persuade him against Houston, but Duncan was going to get paid either way, whereas Van Gundy, if he stays home, loses millions of dollars.

Not necessarily. If he doesn't coach, he's still going to get paid well to broadcast games and will get his payday another year down the line when another team is looking for a coach. If he goes to Washington, he could find himself rewarded pretty handsomely - money & team ownership - even if it isn't quite as much monetarily as it could be in Houston.

As stated in other threads, JVG and the Rockets may be stalling while the Rocks negotiate a non-hurtful deal with the Knicks. The Knicks know we don't want to wait for Aug. 1 to find a new coach, so they may be holding Les's feet to the fire.

Some people need to put themselves in JVG shoes. For all intensive purposes, Washington wouldn't a bad bad place to coach since Unsel is gone. They have alot of young talent, but even more important, they don't have any bad contracts. If JVG goes there, he would be coach and gm which is always attracticve to coaches. At #10, they'll be able to get a very good player to go along with what they have. Another plus is they play in the East, which makes it easier to succeed, look at Detroit and NJ 3 yrs ago. The Wizards only have 1 player making over 6mill and thats Stack and 6 players on rookie contracts. Its better than what people think .

PLease the Wizards are a rock bottom team, and Gunday is only neogotiating with them to extract the most he can out of the Rockets contract. He was literally drooling over the job before, and no doubt Alexander will offer upto 5 mill a year. Van GUndy will take our job.

Come on, how long did it take Brown to make a decision to go to Pistons? One day or two? The position opened, and after two days, he made up his mind.

Rox's position has been open for two weeks! JVG must have thought about it for a long time. Much longer than Brown did on Pistons. I think his waiting here is 99% about money and nothing else. Going to Wizards is just bluffing, he knows that will end his coaching career.

So Larry Brown's setting the standard for decision making now? That's pretty funny.

JVG hasn't exactly had two weeks to ponder part ownership of an NBA team or the likely more than 10 million disparity between the offers or living in Washington vs. Houston.

I repeat, thank goodness it's CD and Les making decisions instead of some of the hothead fans around these parts. Pills are good. Take one.

Its all about control and potential. The Wizards despite messing up in every way possible, still has some players that can be moved. Scenerios playout all the time in trades and negotiations. For all thei shortcomings, they aren't that far from being a playoff team in the east ,which is a start. Any coach going there, have the potential to move players because they don't have really any bad contracts which is key. Leattner, hughes, and White are the next highest paid players behind Stack and they only make 5mill per. They have 6 players on rookie contracts which are very easy to move. Despite not qualifying for the playoffs, they do have some young player with potential and a #10 draft pick this yr.Stackhouse can carry the offensive load right not, but they have a long frontline in Jeffries,Brown, and Haywood at the 3,4,and 5 spots. Their team is about potential just like other young teams like the Bulls. The franchise is resting on the development of those young players. Throw into the mix someone like Barbosa and that team is set. Is JVG patient enough to wait for those guys to develop? Who knows, but if he was thinking about taking over a team that had the worse record in the nba in Cleveland. At least in Washington, he ill be able to move the players he doesn't want and bring ones he do want.

Well, you also thanked CD and Les for lossing Brown to Pistons? We will just see how this play out and whether they will get JVG. From the bad contracts they signed recent years and their strategy in the past two weeks, I can't praise them.

Van Gundy was also offered the opportunity of being the President of Basketball Ops. But there are some rumors which have Wes Unseld being promoted to President and the owner offering Van Gundy the General Manager role instead. Then they will try to fill their VP role Unseld was holding. Unseld is taking a leave of absence from the team following the draft.
