Rules are rules bro. I don't have anything against doing weed, but if you are self consciously breaking agreements in your contract, then you deserve what is coming. I am sure many of us have the same issues in our job. My job prohibits use of drugs, so if I go to Colorado, smoke a joint over there and then come back and get random drug tested and test positive, I could be terminated. I did it legally, but it doesn't excuse me from the contract I have with my company.
I think where we differ is the basis of the ban of mar1juana in their contracts. I see it being done because of the imposed morality implications, and not legality. If it was for legality purposes I think the NBA would change the rules for teams like the nuggets and the sonics (in the future?). I can see how this would be complicated because what if your team was playing in a state where mar1juana is legal, then are you ok to smoke it? We've had no issues with some states have income tax and others not, I'm pretty sure in the long run the NBA could figure out weed usage. I do get that these athletes sign contracts, but to be fair the terms are quite boiler plate here. I doubt a player could walk into a meeting with a GM and say "hey, remove the weed clause and we got a deal". I do agree, these guys are idiots. The NBA conducts four screenings a year, as is the policy for substance abusive is rather lax as Simmons eluded to in an older article. Oh well, selective morality is a funny thing in sports that will exist until the day I die.
No proof. The article says the pictures don't actually show them smoking. Could have just been hand rolled tobacco. May not have inhaled.
Screw the rules. They should all do it more often to put the at arbitrary rule under the spotlight. No reason the NBA should waste time with what people do if it doesn't enhance their performance and as long as it doesn't harm their ability to fulfill the conditions of their contract. Players can drink as much as they want and they do. It affects performance adversely and is more harmful than mj. As players start to take a more lax attitude towards this hopefully the league will be forced to adjust. I certainly don't care if players are doing it in the summer and are not actively seeking publicity. In addition, I would much rather our players light a J the night before a game vs drinking gallons of alcohol and partying all night.
I think we pretty much agree totally, I also find the rules about it silly. I'm just being pragmatic about it, while I agree there are many stupid laws/rules, when you agree to abide by them you can't complain when you get in trouble for breaking the rules you signed on to go by....especially when there is millions of dollars at stake. I think our only point of disagreement is the basis for the rules. You think it is a morality thing, whereas I think it has more to do with a law thing. Pot is still a schedule 1 drug and illegal according to the fedral government...so the NBA bans illegal drugs because they are against the law and they want the public to see they are against illegal drugs because of public perception of the league as a whole. Basically, do the NBA ban drugs because they think the public cares more about the morality of drugs or the legality of it? Beats me, but as far as I am concerned, its the offseason let em do what they want. Its their vacation time.
Is the season currently going on? Is there a possibility they'll be tested tomorrow? Next month? It's Amsterdam, people sposed to puff a lil.
I don't think they can test them right now and legally, no one can prove what that is they're smoking.
Pretty much. It wouldn't hold up in a court unless some ******* witness says so (and even then that's debatable).
ElPigto, you are way to smart for this thread. I would suggest you make like a tree and get out of here (leaf). P.S. you are absolutely right
NBA wont take it to a court of law, but what they will do is remember the names when it comes time to decide who gets the next drug test. Its one thing for the perception to be out there that you smoke pot, the NBA cant target you for public perception....they can and probably will target you if there is visual proof that you do. That to me is the dumb part....not the smoking of it but the visual proof. More power to them if they can afford to go to Amsterdam...wish I could.
Doesn't matter if it's cigarettes, bidis, cigars, or joints. The worst aspect is carcinogens when you light that stuff and inhale it. We get enough as it is, so why as a professional athlete would you want to jeopardize your performance in any way?
Steroids also jeapordize your body long term.. Weed allows your body to take in much more oxygen/retain and conserve it which allows your stamina to last longer and energy to drain slower. There is a very real reason alot of runners and MMA/martial artists smoke weed. The oxygen retaining outweighs the lung capacity issues from smoke/tar. However, vapor is the way to go over smoking/is more efficient. Weed could totally improve your basketball game technique/shooting form ect.. aswell. Maybe Jordan will be able to hit free throws next year
They absolutely do http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/30/sports/basketball/30kobe.html http://www.betus.com.pa/sports-bett...lbert-arenas-could-lose-80m-for-gun-incident/
