Groups Decry US Justice Department Gay-Events Ban It is slowly becoming clearer and clearer to me how John Ashcroft was able to lose his US Senate seat to a dead man. His actions make him look like he is a graduate of the Saddam Hussein School of How to Win Friends and Influence People.
He is a card-carrying fundamentalist preacher....ya think just maaaaaybe that might influence his actions?? He was too conservative for the Regan administration!!
Can a person be any more uptight? I'll bet ya 5 to 1 Ashcroft is gay, classic closet case homophobe does everything possible to hide his true feelings.
I think that some of the Christian far right believes that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice that threatens the American family. I think they are wrong. Their attitude will disappear with time.
John Ashcroft is a big fat liar. Statement of U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis. On Justice Department's Decision to Ban Event by Gay Staff June 6, 2003 During his confirmation hearings, the Attorney General repeatedly assured me that he would not tolerate discrimination against any DOJ employee based on sexual orientation, and in response to my question specifically asking whether he would continue to allow DOJ Pride to use Department facilities, the Attorney General said that he had "no intent to treat this group differently than any other." I call on the Attorney General to uphold his direct promise to me not to discriminate against gay employees and reverse the Department's decision to ban DOJ Pride from holding an event in the Department's headquarters.
I would like to hear what Ashcroft has to say about it...what his reasons were...I'm inclined to rush to judgment too...but I think he may make an argument that this is not discrimination at all...rather, this is a celebration of one's sexuality in the workplace..is that appropriate? i'm not saying one way or the other because i have to think about it some more...but i think it's a legitimate point.
Responding to the title... ...personally, I've failed to see how compassionate conservative is any different from normal conservatism? I'm not necessarily even saying that conservatism isn't compassionate. I just don't see anything particularly compassionate in the Bush approach. Apart from rhetoric, of course (like his education spiel).
I would counter that Mr. Bush's brand of conservatism is not what I would consider to be particularly compassionate. It seems to me like a marketing slogan without any real substance devised specifically to attempt to overcome the way many people have viewed the conservative movement. And I say that as a card-carrying Republican. As for Mr. Ashcroft, a good many of my conservative friends find him to be over-the-top. I certainly don't subscribe to his brand of conservatism.
Anyone who looks to a politician to be a "messiah" has some serious counseling sessions ahead of them.
