There are a bunch of good reviews at http://www.sleeplikethedead.com

What's comfortable varies from person to person depending on how soft or firm you like your mattress.

I'd say you should go to a couple of stores and sit on a few. Can't really get a sense of it without going to the store

This is your first mistake. Get a bed that YOU will enjoy, even if everyone in the world hates it. A bed might be comfortable to sit on, but miserable to sleep on night after night.

Personally, I strongly dislike foam and people swear up and down on them. I prefer my beds firm. Another option to consider is a latex bed. I was pretty impressed with them, but I wasn't ready to commit to the price and not knowing how they would last.

Outside of a few brands (like temperpedic), brands will vary a lot from store to store. It is very very difficult to do a side by side comparison. You will have trouble comparing a Sealy from one store to another store, much less trying to compare Sealy, Simmons or Serta. Nevermind the various no-name brand resellers.

When I do choose to find a new bed on my next go around, I plan on sleeping in a few beds before I make a decision. One thing I have found is if you do go cheap, the bed will not last. However, that doesn't mean dropping 2000 on a mattress will ensure a good bed.

Good luck! The market is a sham.

In order to save a lot of money, I bought an extremely firm but cheap mattress, and then put one of those memory foam toppers on it. Most people can't tell the difference between that and a true temperpedic when they sit on it. I've had it several years now and I'm quite happy.

If you insist on getting a traditional mattress from a traditional mattress store, just keep in mind that it's basically the same process as buying a car. They're a dealer and you're totally able to haggle prices. Be a real hardass. Know the true cost, make an upfront cash offer, and stick to it.

I def suggest a pillow top natress. I bought THIS mattress back in April. We chose it on a Saturday and it was delivered late that evening. The next day I literaly did not get out of the bed, spent the whole day watching GOT leading up to the season premier.

We've been VERY pleased with it.

I personally like waterbeds. I last bought from Right Futon, but I think they closed. :(

If you are going memory foam, I advise you save up for the real Tempurpedic and don't go with another brand's version, even a name brand like Serta. Their foam mattresses are NOT the same, even if you can't tell at first.

tempurpedic is not the only good type of mattress out there though. Go to a good store and sample. Go in prepared to lay down on them. Don't just sit on them or push with your hand. Lay down and stay for a few minutes, try in the position you sleep (side, back, stomach, whatever.)

Be prepared to spend. You spend more time on your mattress (if you're doing it right) than any one thing you will ever own. You spend more time on your mattress than in your car, in a chair, on a couch, in front of your tv, etc. Sleep is so vital to your overall body health as well. Spend on the mattress. Get the one you are most comfortable on, but think long term. Don't find a cheap one that feels nice today, because it won't feel nice in a year.
