US has a chance. Nothing would be sweeter to pull the upset.

The US is better than people think, and can give Germany trouble. Fabian Johnson will play an important factor against the German D as they are SLOW.

If you add a TALL DEFENDER, you shouldn't lose the lead on a header. That really p*ssed me off.

Y'all put in Gonzalez, who should have been just MANNING THE MIDDLE. Don't know what was going through the central defenders' heads.

    :(
That's really bad. It's still going and it will keep going for those of us who like football no matter who's playing.

Anyway, USA can beat the team that tied with the team USA beat.

    Oh.

The source of my confusion was the word "points" in a) and the world "goals" in b) and c). I didn't differentiate that before. Now I get it.

So the next tiebreaker after 'points' is, indeed, cumulative goal differential.

So, for the USA to be eliminated, the mostly likely scenario is the USA loses to Germany and Ghana beats Portugal. USA is plus 1 GD and Ghana -1 GD. If USA loses and Ghana wins, Ghana must gain another two total points in goal difference on the US, just to draw with us on tiebreaker b). THEN it comes down to total goals scored.

    Am I on track now?

That particular quote is confusing, but it is specifically referring to the case where the US loses and Ghana wins. If both of those happen then, yes, if the US's loss is by 2 or more OR Ghana's win is by 2 or more, then Ghana will overtake us in goal differential. It's a quick way of saying that if the US loses and Ghana wins, hope for one-goal matches or we're screwed.

That simplifies it, but there is a set of scenarios where even if both games are decided by one, Ghana can still overtake us, that is, if the overall scoring is higher in the Ghana game (e.g. Gha 2 - Por 1, Ger 1 - US 0).

Or instead of thinking about all this, see here for a handy chart: http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/06/united-states-world-cup-scenarios-germany-ghana

"If Germany defeats USA 2-1 and Ghana defeats Portugal 2-1, the United States advances. But if Germany defeats USA 2-1 and Ghana defeats Portugal 2-0 (or 3-1 or 4-2), the United States does NOT advance."

Actually Portugal is quite bad and made the USA look quite good. They matched up well those teams. Ghana has a very different playing style, they use speed as their advantage which gives a lot of teams trouble. Portugal plays the counter attack game and are deadly as they pass very well when on the run. Ghana will give the same trouble to Portugal as they did to the USA, all that needs to happen is for Ghana to be more lucky than they were against USA.

Germany has not lost a group stage game since 1986? I believe I heard that somewhere.....team USA is unlikely to make it happen....but with the luck they've had, anything is possible.

Actually DDakota is right imo. I actually agree w/him on this and it appears he knows what he is talking about(maybe unintentionally lol).
But firstly, which ANC are you talking about? I don't recall Nigeria playing Ghana at all in the 2013 ANC and Nigeria didn't qualify in 2012.
Either way, Nigeria might be the current African Champions but I'd put money on Ghana to win 2 out of 3 if they played a best of.

Not to rehash the Donovan stuff but folks need to stop w/the mess about him looking like $hit prior to the WC decision. He had one bad match for the USA(the Mexico friendly this year, funnily enough this was after he had a very good match for the USA vs Mexico to help clinch qualification last year) and one could attribute the poor match vs Mexico this year to the knee issue he was dealing with. He had a slow start to the MLS season but the final couple of LA Galaxy matches prior to the WC camp, Donovan was actually rounding off into form and playing well.

Anyway back to the issues at hand for the US team.

Folks need to get off Mike Bradleys case. Now that's what @&#(*@ ticks me off.
He makes one mistake and fans(those that follow the team year in year out and those that just join for the WC) decide to slate him. This isn't Brazil, or Argentina or Germany or Italy. If US fans think there's no loss in quality from Bradley to the next midfielder at his position perhaps Mix Diskerud, then those fans are high.
Plus, this isn't some player that fans know if he makes a mistake he may not take such things seriously(like some players in national teams around the world). MBradley is probably slapping himself every day because of his give away and his play so far.

People need to chill and move on. Germany awaits!

Thanks Ferrari, never understand weak minded people dissing on others opinions, they might learn something if they paid attention.

Here is an article explaining it a bit better.

    http://www.espnfc.com/club/name/660/blog/post/1907603/headline

You are right though, time to focus on Germany, take matters into your own hands and get through.

I think Johnson and Beasely will be the keys to the US attack. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Yedlin get minutes again just to run past them. His speed created the second goal. If they go with the same formation, let Zusi and Bedoya move more central to open up the wings.

I'd still like to see Diskerud get some minutes. Bedoya hasn't really done much and I think Mix could be a good change to make.

Jersey I ordered should come in Wednesday just in time for the game Thursday. Works out they went with collars this year so I can actually get away with wearing this to work on Thursday! I am confident I will get to wear this for more than 1 game!

really? one mistake? he had countless lazy pases in the first half and committed numerous turnovers. lets not even talk about his awful shot on goal that was blocked before clint made a terrific run. he shouldnt have been taking that shot when he had a OPEN zuzi on the side.

lets not even talk about his wide open miss on target or his shot on goal in the first half which was an awful attempt.
