This is entirely up for debate but I'm going to see what y'all think, and post a poll. Categories: Best Cheese Enchiladas Best Enchiladas Best Hard Taco Best Soft Taco Best Taquito Best Fajita Best Burrito Best Nachos Best Flautas Best Tex-Mex Platter Best Tex-Mex for the buck Best Hot Sauce with the chips. Best Fried Fish Taco Best Grilled Fish Taco Best Queso Flameado Best Quesadillas Best Margaritas Best Guacamole Best Breakfast Taco Best Torta Here are mine: Best Cheese Enchiladas-Leo's in Richmond. It's far, but if you're a cheese enchilada afficianado, it's worth the drive. Best Enchiladas-Mine goes to Leo's in Houston. Very close to downtown, and their sauces are classic! Best Hard Taco-Gotta go with Tortuga for the best Hard Taco-they fry the tortillas themselves, and it makes all the difference. Best Soft Taco-I'm sounding gay here, but I LOVE Taco Bell's Soft Taco Supreme! That and a Meximelt. Mmmmmmm. Best Taquito-I've gotta go with Pancho's. Hell, anyone who hasn't had their cheese sauce poured on something should be dragged kicking and screaming. Best Fajita- Ok This is Houston's pride and joy. That said, nobody does it better than the Original Ninfa's. They created it, and they've perfected it. (I'm talking about Navigation,) Best Burrito-Supreme Ultimate Burrito at Chipotle's. (I'll admit, this isn't my best category.) Best Nacho's-Chacho's. Just don't be fooled by all of their "other" nacho varieties as I've been. Go with the standard "Ultimate" and you won't be disappointed. Best Flautas-Taco Cabana. Seriously, these are advertised for a reason. They are excellent. Best Tex-Mex Platter-The Matamoros at Pappasitos. If I'm going to spend $20 on myself, it will be here. Amazing! Best Tex-Mex for the buck-Pancho's. Again, I'm sure I'll get a lot of criticism here, but..... I can eat as much as I want here for $6 bucks! All the time! Every time! I love this place! Best Hot Sauce-Again, has to go to Leo's downtown. They are constantly trying to make new sauces and, if you ask, they will make a sauce to your liking. BUT... they're always trying to make things better. Best Fried Fish Taco-Berryhill Tamales. If you haven't had them, you are missing out. The BEST fried fish Taco's out there. Best Grilled Fish Taco-Cabo's. The reason? Their Habonero hot sauce on their fish taco's is amazing! Best Queso Flameado-Escalante's. Excellent shrimp QF! (honorable mention-Ruchi's Best Quesadillas-Pappasitos-Get the fajita steak quesadilla! Best Margaritas-El Tiempo! Three will put most people under the table. Best Guacamole-Hmmmmm, they mostly all taste the same to me, so I'll go with Pappasio's. Best Breakfast Taco-EASY!! Whataburger Breakfast taco with egg AND potato AND bacon AND cheese! Wonderful. Best Torta-I've gotta go with Ruchi's. Greatest 2.50 you'll spend.. Anyway.... These are mine. Waiting to see what y'all post so that we may have an "informal" poll. We'll see.....
eh, just drive down to galveston and go to el napolito. best everything. really cheap. mexican people eat there.
Mine are whatever www.CitySearch.com chooses each year for awards. ...except their coffee selections... Mmmmm, fish taco...
Mr. Mooch: My point is that I would like to see if their evaluations were correct. In my opinion, they weren't. That's why I started this. Post what YOUR favorites are.
Fair enough; Since I haven't been back to Houston since last March (and probably won't be able to until at least December ), it's hard to remember the great Tex-Mex cuz my taste bud have been poisoned with "Dixie-Mess". Oh god it's terrible. I'll say best fajitas were either Ninfa's or El Tiempo. Chips and salsa: Ninfa's or Los Tios. Tough call for the rest (never had a REAL taquito or flauta ). Never really cared for Escalante's, but some things were good. And there was one on Montross that I can't remember. Oh, for my reference, how is Goode Co. Taqueria?
Lupe's is super overrated. I love the orignal Ninfa's for everything, even though they seem to find a way to screw up our take out order everytime.
Mr. Mooch: #1- if you think Taco Cabana is in the running for "Best Fajitas", you are automatically disqualified.... Escalante's open's a new category... They Have THE BEST Queso Flameado in the city of Houston. So there you go..... Best Queso Flameado-Escalantes. (Honorable mention: Ruchi's.)
I never said Cabana's... thank you edit. What I am really interested is best Mexican dessert places. I've never had anything that's remotely authentic (some will stretch the flan as Mexican or even, gasp, fried ice cream).
If you want good Mexican food, go to El Paso, the Mexican Food Capital of the U.S. I hate living in Dallas. Can't get any good food here...
Anyone ever been to Cinco De Mayo up in Spring? There used to be one right off I-45/Holzwarth by the old Goodyear Blimp base/Loews theatre but it burnt down. They were awesome. Great Fajitas, Salsa, Margaritas and reasonably priced. Fajitas for two was 13.95 with a coupon. We (a group of 5) usually ate dinner and had 3-4 margaritas total and was around $45 with tip included. They have another location up at I-45 and Loop 336 in Conroe that I want to try.
Best shrimp tacos and grilled fish tacos are at the El Rey Taqueria at Shepherd and Washington Ave. Best soft tacos are at Taqueria Arandas on Gessner at 59. Best Tex Mex is at Ninfa's on Navigation or at Spanish Flower on North Main.
Too many catagories for me but I'm going to really go out on a limb and agree with Ninfa's on Navigation being the best in Htown. Love their shrimp quesadillas con mucho margaritas para ima_drummer2k. Anyone on the NW side ever been to El Palenco's on 249 and Spring-Cypress (near Tomball)? Their chicken chimichanga (piled with sour cream) literally melts in your mouth. A close 2nd overall.
cASA oLA , fRESH tOO dAY , eVERYDAY , cASA oLA OLA! p.s. Try Iguana Joes on the east side. They have self serve Ice Cream (UM, Um GOOD)
Best cheese enchiladas -- La Hacienda on Memorial Dr. between Dairy Ashford and Eldridge. I'm a cheese enchilada freak...there are none better. best overall (because i'm too lazy to go through this whole post point by point) -- Doneraki. but I also love Lupe Tortillas.
